Transfer from Cancun to Punta Allen
Hi,
We are heading to Cancun this July and are trying to find a cheap, but reliable, way to get from Cancun or Tulum to Punta Allen. The shuttle companies all charge a fortune but are guaranteed, and the public buses are all cheap but are unreliable.
Does anybody have any suggestions/experiences in this area?
Thanks.

The Riviera bus from the Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen is 65 pesos. Air conditioned, comfortable and leaves almost hourly throughout the day. It lets you off at the bus station in downtown Playa del Carmen. From there you could either get a cab, which would be expensive, or get on one of the collectivo vans which go up and down the highway, cost I think is 15 pesos. The collectivos won't work if you have massive amounts of luggage, but we each had a pull along suitcase and they just threw them in the back of the van. The collectivo lets off on mainstreet in downtown Tulum. Cabs to the beach from there were about $4.00US.

unless things have changed, there isn't any public transportation in and out of Punta Allen. You can only go as far as Tulum. Several years ago there was a collectivo van going in and out once a day, but I was under the impression this service had stopped. If it started back up, you would need to get to Tulum and ask around about this service. The shuttle companies charge high prices because they do not want to go Punta Allen. If there is a heavy rain, you probably will not find anyone wanting to travel there. I would recommend looking into renting a car. I do not recommend a jeep or a van.

I agree with Mayte--as far as I know, no public transportation (bus or collectivo) exists to Punta Allen. I always rent a car to go there. The road can be an adventure if it rains! But, I hope they never fix the road--it saves the area from the destruction being done by tourism elsewhere in the area!
