Taxis in Costa Rica
Do taxis in CR accept five passengers? We are a family of five, but all on the small side and can easily fit in most cabs. When in Mexico, we were able to take some taxis, but one drive mentioned a taxi law that forbid them from carrying more than four people and some were hesitant to beak that rule because they could be suspended for a short period of time. Does anyone know if CR has a similar prohibition about more than four passengers?

Many of the taxis in Costa Rica are actually vans so that will help you out a lot. Somewhat depends where you'll be. At SJO or LIR, you'll be fine because there will be a selection of vehicles waiting. If you were in San Jose, I'd ask your hotel to call someone and wait in the lobby. They will call (or motion - often cabs are at the curb) someone legit, tell the driver where you want to go (street addresses don't necessary mean much), help you establish a fair rate for your destination, etc. Most hotels enjoy suggesting places to eat, things to do, etc.

We were in Costa Rica last January 15 to March 15 and took a lot of taxis. Many were vans with lots of room.
Our best drives were when the hotel called us our taxi, either by phone or from one waiting outside. Our hotel made a note of the vehicle and where we were going so we were not ripped off. Do the same with restaurants or stores.
At other times when we hailed a taxi we were ripped off several times.
On several trips the driver wanted to take us elsewhere. We declined as we knew where we wanted to go. I suggest that you determine exactly where you want to be and insist on going there, otherwise you leave yourself open to a fare that is not agreed to and possibly other problems.
On the whole, taxis were most inexpensive, drivers were quite good and all were friendly.
No other way to go.
I hope this is of help. Costa Rica was a great visit for us.

To answer your question, most taxis in Costa Rica are sedans, not vans. In the front are two bucket seats, one for the driver and one for one passenger. Can the remaining four of you can fit in the back seat?
Airport taxis are a mix of cars and vans, but the typical taxi you find plying the streets of most places is a regular car.
