Surf spot besides Tamarindo

Hello again
Still fine tuning my itinerary. We're staying in Tamarindo for four nights and have two nights to spend somewhere before heading back to San Jose. Not sure if it's worth heading south to Playa Negra or Playa Avellana or try a different place in Tamarindo. I had planned on Samara but we need to have surf for the kids.
Thanks again

Both Playa Negra and Playa Avellana are beautiful beaches that appeared to have good surfing conditions when we were there in August (we don't surf but there were plenty of surfers out there). You don't have stay there, as they both can be reached fairly easily from Tamarindo (it does not take long but the roads are terrible). There is now also a boat service from Tamarindo to those beaches that I read about in the local Tamarindo paper so ask around.

Instead of Samara, you can stay a little north of there, in Nosara. Great surf there.

I surfed Negra in June. I was told its better in the dry seaon with a west swell. When I was there it was okay, but the swell direction was off. Avellanes wasnt happening either. The best surf I found was at the main peak of Playa Grande. Grande is great for the kids also, as there are smaller breaks south of the main peak.
