Side effects of malaria pills

Hi all,

I've just returned from the Peruvian jungle and I'm still taking Malarone for the next several days. I feel so strange, I have a headache, dizziness and I'm tired all the time. I've already called the doctor and I hope to get in today, but I wonder if anyone else has had any of these same symptoms?

Also I have a very strange bite on my leg, it's shaped like the letter J. A centipede maybe?? I hope it wasn't a bat.

Thanks for any input.

Googling for "Malarone side effects" will produce a lot of information.

My friend and I took Malarone years ago for a trip to Bali.. she had terrible nightmares... and acted a bit crazy.. I myself felt more like you did.. almost a depression after I got home.. feeling very tired, down and a bit strange as well.. Hope you had a great trip.

ttraveler, funny you should mention depression because I've been feeling a bit sad today. Not just the usual post-vacation depression, this is worse but manageable.

I will be seeing the doctor tomorrow and maybe she can give me some other type of malaria pills. If not I can tough it out for a few more days. I do want her to look at the bite on my leg too.

It was a great trip indeed.

P_M those are common side effects - they will pass. No idea about the bite, though. Have you posted a trip report yet? We sure missed you on Sunday at the GTG!

Hello all.

I'm back from the doctor's office and she said the bite is from an insect. She thinks an animal bite would have a different shape and there would be torn skin, whereas this is a series of puncture wounds. They took some blood to make sure I don't have any diseases, but she thinks it's just the malaria pills as I suspected. I will continue taking these same pills and I will celebrate on Saturday when I will take my last one!!

Seamus, no trip report just yet. These pills are making me so sleepy it's all I can do to stay awake. Once the pills wear off I will start a report.

Thanks again for all replies.
