San Miguel de Allende, Mexico - Info Required

I'm looking for any info on San Miguel de Allende:
- best time of year to visit?
- great hotels, b&b's, apartments to rent?
- transportation?

What is the closest air port - can you rent a car and is it safe to drive from Mexico City???

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

San Miguel is such a great city, weather is perfect all year long, warmer and wetter in the summer months but not continuous rain, just showers. It's high in altitude which allows it to cool off at night especially in the winter, but warm, sunny clear in the days. It's easy to take a bus from Mexico City from the terminal del Norte..just take a cab there from the airport. Or the drive is easy as well. A great place to stay is the Mansion Virreyes on Canal # 19. phone 0115246520851. It's about a block from the central plaza and is a typical colonial hotel, nothing fancy, just clean, safe, and charming. There are some rooms with kitchens as well if you want to stay longer and cook. Not expensive. Have fun

If anyone has info on San Miguel, I would appreciate it greatly!

Any ideas of how to find casitas to rent for one month?

Driving conditions from Satillo to SM?
safe? Does one need a car once in the city?

Best (cheapest way to fly -- into Mexico City or into Leon?)

Best day trips

Can you rent a car once there?

Thank you for any help!!

I've just returned from a few very enjoyable days in
San Miguel de Allende. Went with 3 other women.
We flew into Mexico City and took a bus from the
Terminal Norte bus terminal. Try to get a "directo"
bus because it's much faster (about 3-1/2 hours).
From the airport you take a taxi. Just be sure it's
a yellow cab with a picture of an airplane on it.
You can also fly into Leon and take a bus from there.
I don't know if it's cheaper. Once in SM you can
really walk everywhere or take a bus or a taxi.
Between the bus terminal and our hotel across town,
the cost was only 12 pesos or 20 pesos (depending on
the taxi!). We stayed in a cheap hotel, the Hotel
la Huerta. There are lots of choices. Right now
it's very dry there but during May or June the
rains should begin, they say. In August, September
or October it should be very green and lovely. We
attended a great flamenco dance concert one evening,
went hiking and walking all over, looked at several
amazing churches (including the one in Tetonilco)
and went mountain biking (see Alberto at Bici Burro).
For other ideas, just see what your guide books
suggest or check out the local tourism office on the
main plaza. There are many good places to eat. We
were only there for 4 nights. Wish it could have been
longer! Have fun!
