Hi Carol, there are probably well over 150 restaurants in Playa. We have been traveling there for going on 13 years now. And although, there are many that we not eaten at, we have tried many. Also we haven't been there since December so I would imagine news have opened and a few have closed. I am listing 6 of our favorites-where they are locate and a little about them. If you have any more questions, feel free to e-mail me.
1. Media Luna-5th ave. vegetarian, but very good and they have specials every night

2. Yaxche-8th between 5 and 10. authentic Mayan. I recommend the poc-chuc. Nice romantic place

3. LaParrilla-5th and 8th-Fun place-very popular-wide variety of food-try and eat around 8 in the evening as this is when the entertainment starts in the street in front of the restaurant

4. Casa de Aqua-on 5th across from Pez Vela(I don't recommend this place)this restaurant is upstairs and very romantic. The food is excellent-one of the nicer places in Playa

5. Babes-on 10th a small place but very popular. Difficult to find a seat. Owned by a Swedish couple and the food is great

6. Buenos Aires-on calle 6-great Argentina steaks-wide variety-very popular. Be sure and stop next door at Sweetwaters-they serve the best margaritas in Playa. Jarrod and Toby, are from Texas and are great guys

Hi Carol,

You got great recommendations from Monica. I definitely second her opinions on Yaxche (dinner) and La Parilla. Johnny Cairo's was over-priced and not that great... If it's still there, Mascara is good Italian.

Stop into Don Emilione's for drinks in the evening - cool upscale (for Playa!) bar.

I remember Playa del Carmen back in 1992 when there was hardly anything there, just some funky hotels and a few restaurants. I was doing a Mexican bus tour from Mexico City throught Palenque, Merida, and Cancun. Haven't been back since! 150 restaurants???? really????

adios!
mexicodan
www.mexicomexico.info

Hi
Be sure and try Mascaras(on the plaza, just off 5th ave). They have wonderful pizza baked in a wood-burning oven. We've eaten there on each of our trips to PDC and everything has been good.

I don't remember the exact address or name but a couple of blocks towards 5th from the Blue Parrot Inn there is an Italian Restaurant. You sit under a big thatched hut roof. My girlfriend thought it was very romantic. The food was so good we had to eat there more than once.
