Renting a car in Tulum

Hello

We are with my wife planning a trip to Tulum for April.
We are thinking of renting a car in Cancun and the prices seem affordable but someone told me that insurance is very expensive.
Could someone who already rented confirm if this is true?
Thank you so much.

True in Mexico you need all the insurances as they have strict motor vehicle laws. At many rental places (typically the major chains) the insurance can double your rate. However, many of the local auto rental agencies will bundle the rental and all insurances at a reasonable price. We have used Avant and Easyway many times, they are both well run and reasonable. The rates are cheaper because they are located a few miles off airport property, out on rte 307. This is not an issue, since they will meet you at the airport with a shuttle van. Having a car is a great plus when staying in Tulum.

zootsi, did you feel comfortable renting/driving a car in the Mayan Riviera? Have heard some stories of the local police not being too friendly & picking on tourists etc. Trying to decide for our upcoming trip in Nov. Thanks!
