Umm hard one! If you're staying in Quito Viejo - the old side I recommend you be very careful about
going about at night - do not cross Parque Ejido in
the dark. I had to get a New Zealander to hospital for his attempt!
Quito Moderno has loads of pavement cafes down their retail / banking street Avenida Amazonas.
The good restaurants are here. Be careful about
nightclubs being brothels. Papillons is a favourite
disco with travellers but do carry your passport as
policemen have incarcerated people with photo-
copies on very random searches here. Chances are it will not happen.
Check current information if you decide to walk up to the Virgin of Quito on Panecillo hill. Check a number of sources.
If you walk down Avenida Amazonas to Parque Ejido and turn left so you go along the park but on the opposite side of the road you can get a bus
to Otavalo on Sundays. It is a very good market
and soon when you travel all over Latin America
( and Spain ) you'll be able to recognise the very
distinctive Otavalo Indians seling their 'Andean
woven Artisanias' of high quality.

stay away from the Panecillo! It is too dangerous without two escorts! Go to Otavalo on Friday afternoon (Hotel Ali Shingu) and enjoy life as it should be lived. Call for picku;p in Quito. Also go horseback riding after you enjoy all mercados!
Quito is great, but we were ripped off by Avis when we tried to rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Don't do business with Avis in Ecuador! We are still waiting for their apoloty for renting our 4 wheel dirve out from under us! They had the audacity to try and put the blame on us! They don't know what a real B can be until they had to answer to my call! Stay away from Avis on Rio Amazonas!
Thanks!

Go up north to the Otovalo area and to Cotacacchi. It is really beautiful and it costs about $30 in a taxi. The ride is about 1 1/2 hours up there. There is a market on satudays but also a smaller one everyday in the same place. There is just so much to do around Quito. Also try to go to the Volcano. Metropolitan Tours has very good iterneraries. Try them out. Good luck.
