Questions about Akumal
There are some great condos. in Akumal listed on locogringo.com. It looks like quite a few are within walking distance to restaurants and shopping. This seems like a great place for us to take our delayed honeymoon, with snorkeling available right off the beach and the ruins not too far away.

Now I'm wondering about practical things like:

-What's the weather like in late-March or early April?
-How tough is the language barrier? (I took Spanish in college but have never been immersed)
-Is it easy to rent a car?
-What's the driving like? (Which side of the road do you drive on? How are the roads?)

I would very much appreciate this kind of information and any other thoughts or tips. Thanks!

Sandra

Weather should still be good in late March/early April.

Driving is good in that area. We've rented a car a few times (while staying in Playa del Carmen) and driven as far south as the Belize border. You drive on the same side of the road as you would in the rest of North America. Roads are fairly good - you just have to watch 'topos' (speed bumps). I think most rental cars have standard transmission, although you can probably rent an automatic for more $.

We've never stayed in Akumal, but have driving down there and spent a few hours. Snorkeling is great. You should have a great time.

I stayed at a beach resort in that area last May and went on tours in Tulum and Xel-ha and it was HOT! I can't imagine no air conditioning. The water there is beautiful for snorkeling. I recommend the tour that takes you to the ruins in Tulum (ruins) and Xel-ha (beautiful park with excellent snorkeling).Everyone we ran into spoke english and were very friendly.
