Puzzled

I am amazed that there is not more discussion about the Riviera Maya on this board. Yucatan was hit with something like Katrina and Rita together and it lasted two days. Devastation is widespread. Most hotels are closed. Isla Mujeres had 5 feet of rain--that's not inches! At one point the water was so high, the island was cut in two! Docks gone, many buildings, etc.

You might want to check on the message board of www.Locogringo.com (Mayan Riviera board). The MR boards are running red hot. It was catastrophic.

However, they will get it back together faster than many think--they don't have to cut through tons of government red tape--they just do it. There is a lot of money involved.

Norm, I've been puzzled as well. It seems that the talk has all been about south Florida but from the looks of it, the Cancun and Riviera Maya area was pummeled and may have long-lasting problems.

I am going to check logogringo - forgot about that site. We have an Isla trip in mid-February.

same here. there's a lot going on at tripadvisor.com too, although it seems there are tons of inane comments and questions amid some good info.

From the pictures I've seen, it looks like Playa del Carmen fared much better than Cancun. Saw some NBC footage of the Cancun beaches that just look devastating. I am just hoping that the Cancun beaches aren't completely gone.

I have read lots of those boards too and it seems that many people who are concerned about their upcoming vacations are getting flamed for "being selfish". Ummm hello...tourism in that area is HUGE. Why would you wnat to go someplace that is flooded, no roads, no way of getting food, and god knows what health issues with standing water! I just cancelled my 10 day vacation to Maroma which was to be Nov 12. There still is no official word on that resort. After calling constantly to AmEx..they finially gave me my 462 thousand points back. The airport is still not open..although there is an Mexicana coming in dropping off supplies and picking up stranded tourists of which there are 20-30 thousand. The line of stranded tourists at the airport is long and the terminals are severly damaged. I honestly don't understand people who have reservations in the near future who are choosing to "wait and see"...what are you waiting for? A vacation is an invstment of time and money. I was lucky enough because I moved fast..I was able to keep my original dates, original air carrier without a penalty, gets my points back (with a little ball busting) and go to another resort - Biras Creek.

We have never been to Maroma before and we were looking forward to it and are very saddened by this disaster. However, I am not going to throw my hard earned money away and go to a place that is for the most part devistated. So if I were your travel agent I would tell you to change plans now...don't wait.
