Punta del Este in EARLY December?
Hi,
I am planning a trip to Argentina for 2 weeks...last week of November to the first week of December...ending at Punta del Este, Uruguay.
Is it a waste to go to Punta del Este that early in December? Too cold? Nothing open? No one around?
Thanks!

many years ago I used to go to Punta in early December, not the first but around the ten of the month and the weather used to be fantastic.Swimming in the beachs was a delightful experience. But lately they tell me sometimes the water is still very cold in December. I did not believe them and I went for Christmas two years ago and it was cold.
So I guess it is a question of luck. Not everything will be closed, it is the begining of the season and many places will be open, but all the activity, shows, etc etc will not be there yet. On the other hand you have more the beaches and streets and forests and everything for yourself to enjoy with out the crowds. I would go, but I would not pre paid for my hotels, no need, and if the weather is not acceptable I would go elsewhere.

December in Punta is really nice. Everything open and it is hot already.
If you are really going there, I can give you some info on restaurants over there. Mail me at [email protected]

As Graziella5b mentioned, it's all a matter of luck. I went in mid-December last year and it was dead. I was very surprised how underutilized Punta del Este is. It was amazing to see how empty it can be. Go downtown and look at the highrise apartment buildings. You will only see about 10 or so lights in each building.
It was still a bit chilly at night when I went in December. Not everything was open either. There isn't too much to do there but it's a wonderful place with great people. They had great restaurants as well.
The properties there are beautiful. I went on a real estate fact finding mission so I had the unique opportunity to visit all kinds of apartments throughout the city. You will find that the majority of PDE is owned by wealthy Argentines. I believe the figure is something around 75% of the properties there are owned by citizens of Argentina. The majority of these people only go there at the end of December and January and the first week in February.
Keep in mind that it gets chilly there much of the year and a good # of buildings have no heaters so there lies the problem. It gets very windy there.
Try to hit it at the end of December if you can. Good luck and have fun.

In reference to the weather in Punta during the Summer Jan to March it gets hot. The beaches are delightful. At night there is always a breeze coming from the South which is very pleasant but during the day it is real Summer weather.
