Puerto Vallarta restaurants

Does anyone have favorite PV restaurants that should not be missed? We're going soon and would love to know about those barely discovered gems! Thanks.

Hola Erin: Read the book Like Water for Chocolate before you come (or while you are lazing on the beach!) Then go to the Red Cabbage Cafe where you will recognize the dishes from the book. Outstanding! Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the crowds on the river. Open 7 days a week, 5pm on. Recommend reservations in high season. Another fun place is the Flaming Sombrero, high on a hill behind the McDonalds in the downtown. Best described as 'fondue without the grease'. Closed Mondays. Loads of great restaurants to choose from but those are my favorites!

Bombo's for romance. Balam for no-frills seafood.

Just found out that Flaming Sombrero has moved! They are across the street from the small park in Los Muertos Beach, around the corner from Daquiri Dicks. Today I just discovered a fantastic seafood restaurant located in El Pitillal called La Concha Feliz (The Happy Shell). Never seen so much seafood in my life and at unbelievably low prices!!!! It was awesome!

Don't remember the name, but there's a great Argentinian steak house on Basillo Badillo (restaurant row). They have the great aged beef and they make the caesar salad dressing for right at the table.

We were in PV last Feb. & are returning next week.

Some of our favorite restaurants were:
Memo's Pancake House, Badillo 289, for breakfast; Le Bistro Jaz Cafe, Rio Cuale, beautiful setting, great food;
and the Adobe Cafe, try to sit in the Courtyard, Very romantic. For casual dining, Greek food, try Karpathos Taverna, Rodolfo 110 at Olas Altas.

Try Pepe's or PiPi's (not for sure on the spelling). Excellent Mexican food. Great atmosphere. Inexpensive. The margarita's are huge. They make fresh guac dip at your table. The service is excellent. It is in downtown PV.

There are so many great places, Chef Roger's, La Bistro and Dacquiri Dicks are fantastic and great atmosphere. For pure romance and elegance, take a cab to La Perla at the Camino Real. A five star restaurant where you can eat for about 15.00 to 20.00 per person including a drink. You are treated like royality!!

change! change! Flaming Sombrero has moved back to its original location (that new location lasted about a week!). They are now back at 'home' on the street that runs along the side of McDonalds in the downtown, up in the hill. Much better location! El Pitillal is sort of like the 'suburb' of Puerto Vallarta. Excellent shopping, great food and way cheaper than in downtown PV. To get to Concha Feliz, take the bus to El Pitillal (it'll say that on the bus). This is going to be a bit confusing, but make sure you get on a bus to Pitillal in downtown Puerto Vallarta. You'll pass through a couple areas called Aurora and Aramara. The road will curve, passing an outside furniture store. The first bus stop get off. You'll look up to your right and there will be a sign Concha Feliz with an arrow pointing right. Walk about 1/2 block and there you are!

We were just in p.v. and really enjoyed the area...but everyone we spoke to who ate somewhere off the resort lost at least one and maybe two days of their vacation due to getting very sick.
Two different people ended up in hospital for i.v.
Make sure you have insurance...one lady had to pay $800 for 2 bags of i.v.fluid and the visit to the hospital.
The common bond between about 7 different people we met in our 1 week was that they ate somewhere (one couple ate at Outback Steakhouse and had ceaser salad and shrimp and lost 2 days due to sickness).
Just be careful...and have insurance!
Daquiri Dicks has great food, drinks and great view of the beach & ocean. Also, Le Kliff just south of PV has fantastic food and even better is the view! It is pearched over the cliff, with tables terraced down the side of the cliff. We had reservations for 1/2 hour before sunset and it was awsome! We ordered the special for $65 US and got 4 lobster tails, shrimp, mahi-mahi along with soup and bread - everything was great!! Le Kliff is not to be missed!

Sorry to say that the Flaming Sombrero is no more as of Wed. 31st. I recommend Jaguar up on the hill south of town, all the locals go there, great steaks!
Hasta,
JR

Memos (already mentioned) is the BEST place for breakfast! We went practically every morning on our last visit and plan to do the same when we return in a couple of weeks. {And, if they still exchange pesos for dollars, they had the best exchange rate when we were there.} Another restaurant for dinner would be Los Arbolitos - a bit of a walk but certainly worth it! The snapper with garlic sauce is out of this world!
