Definitely you need to plan a morning on the southside. Maybe on a Saturday so you could see the two "Farmers Markets" (in quotes because it's more a food and craft fair there aren't really any "farmers" there!).
Oooh there's a new chocolate shop on Badillo, by the corner of Olas Altas that is fabulous. That's what I used for souveniers for friends and family my last trip. Has an X in the name. Near the also newish French bakery and ice cream stand! I'm telling you that neighborhood is "dangerous"!

suze - just curious - have you ever heard of either the bar/restaurant called the Cheeky Monkey or the restaurant Taste of Italy? Both are owned by relatives of mine that I haven't seen in probably 30 years or more.

tom42~ Sure I know of both of them. Honestly have never been to neither.
People love Cheeky Monkey (and Sea Monkey on the beach) for their cheap beer and margaritas.
I walk by Taste of Italy all the time, it's VERY popular. My neighbor last trip swore by their chicken parmesean (she'd get it to-go in the afternoon and heat it up for dinner) said it was great.
Maybe you should make friends with your long-lost relatives -ha!
carbon~ There were zero farmers (or vegetables) in sight the morning I was there but that was back in November. Maybe more vendors now that it's high season.

wtm~ The chocolate shop is really fabulous. I'd put off stopping in because it looked kind of fancy (expensive) to me. But do not miss it!! Besides being delicious there offer lots of small/cute packaging with their local label so makes for great gifts.

Troy is the owner of Cheeky/Sea Monkey and his parents were running Taste of Italy, believe they have since retired but the restaurant continues.
One pretty large stand selling organic veggies, including some exotic, like Chinese Long Beans.

Hola amigos! It is very warm/hot and I'm a little tipsy after dos margaritas at El Barracuda but I can honestly say that I love Puerto Vallarta. I'll report back when I get home but I've been very lazy. It is hard to get off the beach chair when dolphins in the bay are putting on a free show. I'm off for a swim. Thanks again to everyone for all the suggestions!

Green with envy that you are at the Barracuda while I am home cleaning the BR.
Another place we liked is the Mango Beach Club- they have 4 poster beds to lay on and you can get a massage while stretched out in the sun, you can use their equipment including kayaks for the price of a tip -
The downside is that they have a DJ - sometimes I liked the music, sometimes I didn't - but after a couple of margaritas, I didn't care really.
The guys who work there are so sweet- they adjust your umbrellas if you are getting too much sun and wait on you hand and foot-
