Playa del Carmen to Chichen on own
We will be staying at Barcelo Maya Caribe, south of Playa, and would like to visit Chichen. Is there any way to get there from our location other than the hotel's tour?

I believe there are several tour operators in downtown Playa. You could also rent a car and drive yourself - easy, but long drive. Have you considered the ruins at Tulum and or Coba, which are quite impressive and much closer to Playa?

One operator I know is Mitch at Yukatreks. Smaller vans and personal tours. The drive is an easy one through Tulum and then west to Chichen Itza. Tulum and Coba have very different atmospheres. Tulum is smaller and on the water. Coba is more jungular and impressive but Chichen Itza is definitely in another league. Get there early if you drive yourself. I believe they open at 8 and the tour buses generally don't start arriving until around 10 so it's a bit quieter.

I agree go with Mitch from Yukatreks. Small groups. They do a great job.

Thanks for your input. I checked out the web sites you recommended. We have been to Tulum and loved it.
I was thinking about transportation more in line with local buses. Would we be able to catch a bus without going into Playa? As you can tell I am not familiar with the area. Our last trip was just a day trip off of a cruise ship.
Is Chichen Itza closer to Cancun or Playa?

AS to the last question - Chichen Itza is just off the main road that goes east west from Cancun across the Mayan peninsula. So, as the crow flies, P de C is closer, but the drive is less from Cancun as there is not a road that goes straight west out of P de C.

Thanks again for the information. I found that we can catch a bus from Tulum to either Coba (40 min.) or Chichen itza (2 1/2 hrs.) With our time constraints, I think that Coba would be our best option. I like the idea of riding bicycles around the area, and being able to climb the pyramid. Any pointers on a successful Coba visit?
