Peace Lodge and La Paz Waterfall Gardens are totally open!

Hey all,

I just received an email from the owners of La Paz Waterfall gardens. Although work on the fine details is ongoing, both the gardens and the hotel are totally open and operational.

The road through Heredia is still closed. So they recommend that you take the road from Alajuela to the site. That goes for those traveling from Arenal as well. You have to go through Alajuela, not through San Miguel.

They are such a great couple, and this is an amazing hotel in a beautiful setting. It is great to see them recover from this.

Hope this helps! Let me know if I can offer any more advice.

Warm Regards,
Pat Hewitt

Ummm, not quite back to normal.

We were there last week. You can see only two of the 5 waterfalls, and the roads, while considered open by CR standards, are a mess of mud and heavy equipment.

About half of the park is still closed, but it what is open is beautiful and the staff is friendly.

That mud slide did real damage to the area. If you are going shortly after the date of this post, be cautious on your drive. There is no way those roads would be open anywhere in the US.

I have a comical picture of a series of 6 boulders placed on the edge of the washed away road: Those are your deterrents from going off the cliff.

Wow, beenthere, thanks for the update. We saw some similar damage on our drive up to Arenal. In one place, half the road was gone due to landslides, and everyone was just driving along. We thought the same thing - you would never see that in the states. Hope Peace Lodge is fully recovered soon. I'm sure it's no easy process.

Just to be clear, it was an EARTHQUAKE, not a mudslide. We were there when it happened, and having experienced it, as well as the aftershocks all night long, am hoping no one has forgotten all the losses that occured for the local people and farmers. Much moreso than a mudslide would have done.

Good to know they're open at least 50%. It's a beautiful area. Indeed the mudslides caused by the earthquake were devastating.

aby, you might check their website. I know they've been putting updates on there or just e-mail them. They're pretty good about e-mailing back. I know they've been running some specials to compensate for some of the falls being closed - special prices on massages, free nocturnal frog tour, etc. We missed going there this trip.
