PDC hotel with actual ocean view?

We like the idea of staying in PDC (thanks to earlier post). However, we really want a true ocean view from our balcony/terrace. This seems to be tricky in PDC even for beachfront hotels, b/c hotels are not as tall, or are built back in a "garden." There will be 2 adults and 2 children (4 and 8). We need a decent pool, are flexible on whether it is AI, and prefer to be within reasonable walking distance to PDC, but we might give that up for a view. Money is always an issue, but we will pay according to value. Thanks for your suggestions.
FYI: Playa Maya is often recommended here, but it seems iffy about beach views. Ahlambra (sp?) and mimi look good but no/small pool. Gran Porto Real seems to be one of the only AI's where I can guaranty a view ("ocean front" jr. suite)

Thanks! Unfortunately, I've read online that Shangri La and Los Palapas (sp?) appear to be closing in the next month or so. (We are going in late April). If anyone has some current info, I'd be interested in it. Hopefully that info is incorrect.

No, Shangri La Caribe is NOT closing, at least not this year. And yes there are numerous posts announcing the close. I checked with the hotel itself and with Turquoise Reef (bookers) and SLC will remain open throughout all of 2007 and probably into 2008.

I will be there 26 April - 5 May 2007.

ACK, I meant to say: SLC will remain open throughout all of 2008 and probably into 2009.

We were in your same situation and looked and looked. We are a family of four - 2 kids 8 and 10 - We finally settled on Mimi and booked the oceanfront room. The balcony looks great. This just won't be a "pool" trip for us. We will do more beach time and touring. I think the location looks great and the price is right!

Thanks for the feedback! Good to hear about Shagri la. I went ahead and booked a condo at Xaman-ha. Looks like a good location and view, with pool. Not AI, but it has a kitchen so we don't have to eat out every meal. Also has a little more space for everyone (than a hotel room would). If anyone has tips about the area around the condos or nearby restaurant recommendations let me know! Thanks again.
