Pacific Coast Beach with Waves, Food, Tropical Feel

Family with older teens considering a trip to Costa Rica in early January (Christmas break). Can fly in and out of Liberia or San Jose. First time trip.

We definitely want to experience Arenal and would then like to end our trip at an oceanfront property for at 3 or 4 nights with:

-Local dining options, not just a hotel restaurant
-Prefer oceanfront rooms or an area with vrbo rentals (family of 5)
- Beach should be swimmable and big enough waves to satisfy kids who like to bodyboard and BODYsurf (we live in Southern CA so they are sort of picky about the waves; does not need to be a "surf" spot per se!)
-Safe, beautiful beach!
- Would love a tropical feel to the area
- Some options for walking around a town or doing something other than the beach
-Snorkeling, catamaran cruises or jet skis a plus!
-Not as worried about the price of lodging as being right on the beach

Finally, we are concerned about the drive time back to an airport. A travel agent has recommended Playa Hermosa. ANY tips are appreciated! Thank you!!!! If this info is in the forum already, please let me know - I could not find it

Did you end up going on the trip over Christmas break? Thinking of doing the same-ish for the holidays in 2018.

Tulemar has their own beach, plus free use of boogie boards and kayaks; also lots of good open air casual restaurants nearby like Barba Roja, Cafe Agua Azul, etc. Tons of wildlife on the property as well - we saw monkeys regularly and sloths and an aracari.
