Mexico itinerary for 8-9 days

Hello! I will be in Mexico from Oct 29 - Nov 5 or 6 with my boyfriend.

How would you recommend I structure that time? I am ok with being in Mexico City for Day of the Dead.

Priorities are culture, local food, and one hike (my boyfriend is a serious hiker so whatever the most famous or beautiful hike is most likely).

I would most likely fly in and out of Mexico City because the airfare is cheapest this way.

Hi lauroru,

You really don't have all that long. Suze's suggestion of a nearby colonial city is a good one, you'll have time for maybe one or two. As one who wants to try local food, the large city of Puebla was absolutely stellar (home of the mole poblano (of multiple varieties) & several other less known dishes like the cemita and chiles en nogada), although just about every town I've been to in Central Mexico has its own specialties (Queretaro: arrachera; San Luis Potosi: Enchiladas potosinas).

There are many terrific hiking options in Central Mexico; I enjoyed clambering up the paths to the Pena de Bernal in Queretaro state, which might be an option if you choose to head north to Queretaro/San Miguel de Allende after a bit of exploration of the capital. Even climbing up the pyramids at Teotihuacan and Cholula were a real workout!

I definitely would recommend going to Teotihuacan, the Museo de Antropologia and the Templo Mayor while in the capital. Taking a trajinera (a type of boat) at Xochimilco (the floating gardens) was also a highlight.

You're in for a real treat! Best wishes, Daniel
