Went with AutoEurope as a third party rental from Thrifty for $670 prepaid voucher + airport one way fee $28 (pay if I use it) + American Express premium $20 insurance policy. AutoEurope will pay me $250 if the size of car reserved is not available at the designated location and time. We really need a full sized car. And since it is prepaid there's no opportunity for a currency scam markup to pesos at a poor rate.
Car comes with basic CDW and Theft but with a high $1500 deductible. I could have added zero deductible for just $2 more/day but then CDW and theft only cover that, they DO NOT cover all types of damage: vandalism, storm damage (hail, fallen tree limb, water damage) or broken glass, none of this is covered by CDW but which the Amex policy covers in full. So why pay $16 more for zero deductible with huge gaps in damage coverage when I can pay $20 more with no gap in damage coverage? Amex covers everything except a flat tire and they also cover loss of use and occupant medical coverage.
I realize I am paying twice for insurance, the 100% everything Amex policy then the Mexican high deductible insurance, but AutoEurope doesn't offer cars without basic insurance coverage for Mexico. Also I am getting the supplemental liability from Thrifty which is good and something I do want. With Thrifty I can pick up the car right at my Cancun hotel which is worth a lot for the convenience.
Going directly to the websites (Hertz, Avis,) even with just liability coverage and no other, cars are coming in near $550 so not much different than AutoEurope, and then I have to deal with the heavy sales pitch and high credit card hold of I refuse additional insurance. And no guarantee of availability.
Easyway does not provide full sized cars, and even then their largest sedan, the Jetta, is over $800. Avant came in at $660 which is a bit less but not worth the loss of convenience over renting at the hotel and dropping directly at the airport. America offers an attractive rate at $440 but the reviews are iffy.
Spent too much time on this but really feel that I have it all straight.
