Mexico airfare

My husband and I will be going to Mexico in May (Playa del Carmen and Oaxaca), and I have begun airfare shopping. It may well be too early to get a good deal, but it's never too early to begin to obsess!

Anyway, our air route is as follows: Boston-Cancun, Cancun-Oaxaca, Oaxaca-Boston. I have gone to multiple airfare sites and Orbitz returned a fare of $888 for this itinerary. Does that seem like a good price for May, or should we wait until closer to our travel dates? I know May is considered off season for Mexican hotel rates, but I don't know what a "reasonable bargain" airfare might be at that time for a route like ours.

Does anyone have experience with traveling from the northeast U.S. to Mexico in May, and/or have an idea if this price seems decent or not?

Thanks.

Liz

I just booked round trip from NY to Cancun for $700 each, so yours sounds about right. I was debating whether to wait and hold out for a better deal, but even if I got a lower rate, it wouldn't be by much, and then I might have been closed out of the flights I wanted. It's a question of getting what you want now, or waiting and hoping it gets a bit cheaper. But, it could go up also, so you just have to decide what you're comfortable paying, and when you see it, take it.

Are you going in May too?

You're right about taking chances that things might be higher, or unavailable, but I'm also curious about the lowest low-season price anyone has seen for Northeast US to Cancun OR Oaxaca. Of course, I realize our fare will be higher than either.

We're going April 24 to May 1, which is after spring break, Easter "high season". But, I don't think there's that much variation in price at that time of year that it would make a significant difference.

My husband and I are going in June and I have already purchased our tickets. Like you, I checked all the sites but onetravel.com had the best deal. I chose the "white label" fare which does not tell you the carrier (although it guarantees it is a major airline) and it does give you the times. I looked on Expedia to find the corresponding times and figured out the flights! Good luck!

I go to Oaxaca on a regular basis flying out of Arkansas or Texas. That seems like a fair price as you have two destinations in Mexico.

Thanks, Dude.

It ended up that the $888 price at Orbitz was bogus (meaning they couldn't actually sell me the tickets or book me on it). Then I went to One Travel per Leeann's advice (though I didn't see anything called a "white label&quot. They had a routing of $975 via United, and then I called United itself and got the same flights for $898!

I appreciate your telling me it sounds like a fair deal.

Hi, lizzoob! I just checked onetravel and it says that roundtrip fare from Boston to Cancun is available for $484.00 on the white label carrier! How did you do your search? (Just type it in the big yellow search box on the home page) I didn't know your exact dates but I did use the month of May. Hope you are able to get a good deal!

We flew from Miami to Mexico city in November both for 632 through Orbitz no bogus there. We flew MEXICANA. NICE AIRBUS planes. Within Mexico we used the UNO bus service and others which are excellent and very inexpensive. B uses in Mexico where a revelation, they offer this ultra de luxe service that are really unique. I bought the bus tickets from Miami by phone giving a credit card. Not only the buses are exscellent, carry very few persons, but they have they own VIP rooms at bus terminals .
This way we saved a lot because the plane ticket would have been a lot more. You can arrive at the airport and from there take a bus out of Mexico City too.
