Mayan Sun Coast vs Hotel zone in Cancun?

Any recommendations / preferences for the 2 areas? Is the beach just as nice at both locations?

In my opinion Cancun is way too crowded and commercial. The Mayan coast is so much nicer. It's quieter and the beaches are just as nice if not nicer. I would suggest that you stay at a 4-5 star resort and you will be fine. The Tulum/Akumal area is very nice and laid back. We have been to the Mayan Riviera 3 times in the past 5 years and have enjoyed all 3 holidays. Good luck!

I spent 4 hours in Cancun as I waited for my flight home from the Yucatan. It's expensive and walking down the main street you can't see the ocean, just lots of concrete.

In regards to Karla's comment, if she was in downtown Cancun, its true--you can't the the ocean. The downtown area is not near the ocean but, of course, the hotel zone is on the ocean.
I do much prefer the Riviera Maya or Cozumel to Cancun. Cancun is much too commercial and crowded for my tastes but some prefer that atmosphere.

Both areas are nice. I agree with RobertSDF, it really depends on your preference, Cancun is crowded with lots of activities and night life. The Mayan coast is generally more quite. Although Playa del Carmen is pretty lively at night.

Agree with the previous comments, Cancun is much too crowded, way too many hotels and too too expensive. If I ever go again it will definitely be the Riviera Maya region if fact I know I will be going there next year.

The debate over which is better, Cancun, cozumel or PDC area seems to be a constant staple on this board. It's been hotly debated and opined on, but the truth is this: which area is better will depend on you, your perceptions and preferences. My opinion is that you should experience a trip to all three and then decide for yourself. If you just ask on this board you'll only get the perceptions of the posters which may or may not be similar to yours.

After going to Cancun for several years and reading in this forum how much better, more beautiful, etc, the PDC area was, I decided to check it out for myself. I had a great time, stayed at a lovely hotel, and enjoyed my trip. But when it was over, I found that given the choice, I prefered Cancun. I can find peace and tranquility and beautiful beaches in Cancun and I can also find exciting night life too. Those things can be found in Cozumel and PDC too - it's all in what YOU personally prefer. So get out and experience all of what the Caribbean side of Mexico has to offer.
