Just returned from a week in Belize

And absolutely loved it. We spent three nights in a Jungle Lodge and 4 nights at The Belize Yacht Club on Ambergris Caye. If you are looking for fancy nightclubs and elegant dinners, Belize is not your place. If you don't want to wear shoes to dinner then Belize is your place. We found the food, people, snorkeling and fishing AWESOME. We also met a great guide at the Dock of the Belize Yacht Club. Just ask for him. His name is Tulo and we had the greatest day snorkeling and fishing with him and then he took us to a restaurant called the Palapa where they cooked the fish we just caught. It was great! Can't wait to go back!

What jungle lodge did you stay at? Did you do any tours? If so what ones? Thanks.
We stayed at The Jaguar Paw Jungle Lodge on the Caves Branch River in the Caypo district and loved it. Only problem was that I had my pocketbook stolen right out of my room the first night we arrived. I did not allow that to ruin my vacation. While at the lodge we tubed on the Caves Branch River. I would suggest a half day and we took a night jungle walk but personally I think the daytime is better. The food was excellent and the service was good. If not for my pocketbook theft it would have been awesome.

Didn't the hurricane last December do major to Belize? Noticed that you just went. Also what are the beaches like in Belize? Ambergis Caye? I want to take to kids and would like a beach that they could walk out into the water a ways. Any suggestions?

Belize was very lucky in that the reef kept both the Cayes and the mainland from being hit by the hurricane so i was told that they sustained no damage at all...there was none that I could see. I loved Belize but it definitely is not a place to go if you want great beaches.

We stayed at the Belize Yacht Club and there are Lounge chairs on the beach but it is basically a bulkhead. If you wanted to go in the water you have to go out on the dock. There is also a lot of seaweed. Perhaps you should consider Mexico.

I agree with Elaine re the beaches. We were there a couple of years ago and loved the country, but the beaches were more or less non-existant on Ambergris. I had heard good things about Placencia which apparently had the nicest beaches in the country, but the beaches were nothing special there either. Belize is wonderful for snorkeling, exploring ruins, etc. - definitely a wonderful country to visit - but it's not really a 'beach' destination.
