Heading to 2 weeks of surf/spanish school and read confusingly varied views of Jaco: jewel or slum. Any recent experiences, survival tips? Duane in Vermont

Jaco has changed a lot in the recent years. The construction there is crazy, but it still a nice town to visit. The waves are good and you can still find a cheap place to sleep or eat.
There are many prostitutes, but if you do your own thing they won't bother you.

We just got back from a week in that area. We went into Jaco daily for surfing and meals. I wasn't sure what to expect given all the less than favorable reviews, but I have to say - I thought it was fine. It's just what I imagined a surf town in central America to be like. It wasn't new or immaculate or Americanized - and I liked that.

We were there with our 4 y/o and we strolled around every night after dinner (I must be dense or we weren't out late enought, but I didn't notice any prostitution), there were no issues with parking the car, no issues with theft, and I can't think of a single survival tip aside from watching out for the Ticos when you're driving a car!

Have fun surfing and if you want a great meal - Pacific Bistro. Not cheap, but soooo good!

You will get a heads up befroe you get to Jaco so you know how to keep yourself safe.

I was in Jaco last August. I never had any trouble while I was there. Just be self aware, and you'll enjoy yourself. Some of the reviews I have seen on other web sites have me saying "come on!" There is crime anywhere you go. It's common sense to lock your doors of your rental, and keep an eye on your wallet.You're just as likely to run into trouble back home. I thought it was a "jewel." The beach is gorgeous by the way, you'll have an awesome time.
