Immunizations for trip to Peru

My husband and I have begun to plan a trip to Peru. However, after reading Frommer's recommendations for immunizations, I am a little hesitant. Did those of you who have already traveled there get immunized for yellowfever, malaria (treatments), hepatitas A & B, diptheria, measels, tetnus, etc. etc. etc.???? Is it really that dangerous?? We are in our 60's and are independent travelers usually.

Jane,

We leave for Peru in three weeks, independent travel. We were recommended, by the hospital immunizations department in our town: Hep A for all parts of Peru; yellow fever and malaria if you're going to the Amazon area or Amazon Basin area. They defined Amazon as the area around Iquitos (northern area); and Amazon Basin around Puerto Maldanado (east of Cuzco in the southern area). They didn't mention tetnus, but our tetnus is current. They didn't mention other immunizations that you mentioned.

No, I don't think Peru is dangerous given proper precautions ... the usual precautions of bottled water and cooked or peeled foods, and plenty of insect spray with DEET.

I'd be glad to share our experiences when we return. Leaving September 10 and return the 27th.

Hi Jane,
Getting the immunizations is worth the trouble as they will give you peace of mind while traveling and should there be an outbreak of say, yellow fever, you won't have to worry. Malaria pills are essential if you are traveling to a lowland area like the Amazon or coast. And besides, the hepatitis A&B and tetanus shots will protect you for years both here in the US and anywhere else you may travel. Get immunized and go and have a great time!

Thanks, Karen and John. You are correct, of course. I guess I'll "bite the bullet" and get started on the shots--closer to time of actual trip, however. Karen, please do share you experiences when you return.

Jane,

I'm not sure when you're leaving, but make sure you get the Hepatitis A shot at least 3 weeks before you leave for it to be effective. You need to get the 2nd one 6 months later, but the first one will cover you for now. This is one of the most important shots to get when traveling almost anywhere.

Have fun,

Krista
