If you were staying at the Xcaret resort the price to the park is included in your hotel reservation. You have a one day unlimited pass so you can come and go as you please. We snorkelled through the caves and saw the fantastic (but long) show in the evening.
When we stayed in Playacar we took a fantastic snorkelling trip with Scuba Caribe to INAH. Terrific reef just south of the Xcaret. 20 minute boat ride each way and 50 minutes of snorkelling. Absolutely terrific. The guide will take pictures of you and of what you see and put it on a CD for you to take home for a very reasonable price.
We also did the bar hopping tour to Playa Del Carmen - the first 2 bars are Senor Frogs and Carlos and Charlies the 3rd was the fabulous Mambo Cafe - a cuban band was playing and it was great. Locals go there and the music and dancing is wonderful.
We have done the evening pirate cruise in Cancun but Cancun is 45 minutes each way from Playa Del Carmen so it is a long evening.
We also did Tulum - great to see once -I would recommend wearing your bathing suit under your light clothes so you can take a dip in the water while you are there as there is no where to change except under the 3 palm trees that are there.
Friends of ours went to Xel Ha and they really enjoyed this - snorkelled and lazed around in the lazy river.
Enjoy yourselves.

A Cenote is a naturally occuring spring. I assume they're pretty cold?

Not that cold really. If you're thinking mountain spring cold rest assured, they are crystal clear but on the surface atleast, refreshingly cool.

There are literally hundreds in the area. All unique and very beautiful. Grand Cenote is worth a trip and close to PDC as is Cenote Azure. Check http://www.playadelcarmeninfo.com/
for really outstanding information.

We took a Xel Ha & Tulum excursion and enjoyed both very much. I would suggest doing these on you'r own and not booking an excursion. We felt very rushed in both places. Xel Ha is AWESOME, great snorkeling, underwater cave and very relaxing. We enjoyed so much we are going back in December just to spend more time at Tulum and Xel Ha, will be going on our own this time NOT through a tour.

We went to Hidden Worlds Cenotes and it was an amazing experience. The water was about 72 degrees (we were there at the end of June/early July). You wear wetsuits, and once you get used to the water it was ok. We did a snorkeling tour of two cenotes. They take you about 20 minutes into the jungle, and the entrance to the cenotes was a little scary...it's basically a hole in the ground and you climb down a ladder into the cave. It is fresh water and is so crystal clear that snorkeling in there gives you the feeling of flying. You have to float and dodge the stalctites and stagmites, and you can see crevaces that are so deep! Everything is lit with hidden lighing under the water so you can see. There are little fish swimming around. It was a truly amazing tour and definitely worth it. I would recommend it. They made an IMAX movie of diving in the cenotes and it was filmed at Hidden Worlds called 'Journey into Amazing Caves'.
Another must see is Alux. It's a bar/restaurant in a cave! It's not on the main strip but worth it. It is HUGE, and every night at 10:00pm they have a belly dancer. I can't even describe this place in words, but it will give you goose bumps...beautiful. I hear the food is hit or miss, but definitely stop in for a drink.

If you go to Cozumel, you should rent scooters. When you get to the other side of the island it's very relaxing. If you do rent scooters, I found better deals and a longer rental time. We rented ours from a place called Rentadora"CHAC", it's off of 15 Ave and 10. We paid 30 us for 9 hours, gas, insurance, and rental.
Tulum was nice, we took a bus for 3 us, I only wish we would have gone earlier. The first bus was sold out, so we did not get there until 11 am, and the place was packed. If you have some spare time the beaches in Tulum are beautiful. The one thing we didn't do and wished we did, was go to Coba, I hear it's great. Have a wonderful time.
