If you had to name one favorite thing about Costa Rica...
what would it be? What was your one favorite experience, sight, food, hotel... Something that you wish you could experience again?

I would probably cast my vote for Bosque del Cabo on the Osa peninsula. It's beautiful, serene, and off-the-beaten-track with wonderful hiking trails and views of the Pacific ocean and Golfo Dulce. The lodge owners and staff are incredibly nice, and the food and accommodations are fantastic. It's just a really great place to unwind and commune with nature. I've visited twice and would go again in a heartbeat.

Staying at a bed and breakfast near San Jose instead of a hotel. It was great to have a home base to come back to as we traveled around the country. We got to practice our Spanish, and it was much more comfortable than a hotel.
Most language schools can arrange a homestay. We stayed with Miriam Morales in Heredia (closer to the airport than San Jose and more peaceful). [email protected] or www.miriams-rooms.com
She is a very nice lady.

Sitting on the porch of Casa Linda (rentable bamboo house)in Matapalo on the Osa Peninsula with a glass of wine in the evening. Watching scarlet macaws and monkeys come through the yard during the day.

Tough to name just one thing! But the overall pura vida feeling you get being there. It's just a wonderful feeling!
But my favorite experiences would have to be: watching the sea turtles lay her eggs and head back to the ocean - that was magical. Hearing Arenal rumble for the first time! Feeding the hummingbirds at the Peace Lodge. Hearing the Howler Monkeys....it goes on and on!

2nd night in Costa Rica - 1st night at Arenal. Drove west from Arenal Paraiso to hopefully see the lava flows... Stopped along the highway when we saw "red stuff" and climbed up a berm from the road - pitch black, had no idea where we were. In front of us was a sea of fireflies lighting up an open space. Above us was the volcano spewing rocks and lava -we could see/hear/feel the boulders bouncing down the slope of the volcano. To this day, is the most spectacular moment in the lives of 2 50+ year olds, one teen-ager and 2 young kids.

All of the above, and more. Impossible to name a favorite place or experience, but it all adds up to Pura Vida! Agree the turtle watching is unbelievably spiritual. Agree the people are the country's greatest treasure. And on and on and on!

The people, the beauty, the weather, the wildlife, the beaches, the sheer beauty and uniqueness, the proximity to the U.S. and I could go on and on! My favorite is Manuel Antonio. One of the top 10 beaches in the world, dining in 5 star restaurants at eye level with 3 varities of monkeys often within arm's reach. Where else do you find a setting like this? I loved it so much I packed 2 suitcases, left the U.S. and now enjoy this true paradise on a daily basis. Now this is retirement!

Arenal volcano is our favorite too; the first time you hear the rumbling is amazing. And seeing rocks bolt down the side is really cool. Love Fortuna waterfall too and the wildlife on the Osa Peninsula. It really is hard to choose; that's why so many people go back.
