HoneyMoon - Gutemala - Mexico

Hello All,

my wife and i are going on our honeymoon in January.
we are thinking about Guatemala - Mexico ( 21 days total).

our budget is about 6-7K (USD) - includes everything (flights, transportation, shopping maybe..)

i thought about 14 days in Guatemala and 7 days in Mexico.
*Guatemala is more nature & hiking
*mexico - more honeymoon style - all inclusive resorts/ beach/ romantic

would love to get suggestions on optional routs/ schedule

That sounds like a good plan for a honeymoon, esp if you can arrange to fly into Guatemala City and out of (for example) Cancún to avoid lots of backtracking. If it was my trip I would find just what I was looking for in Belize and fly home from there - some great options and less time on the road.

For the Guatemala parts, Antigua, Lake Atitlán, and Tikal are highlights. I think there are buses that head from Flores (an hour+ from Tikal) through Belize to the Yucatán Peninsula. Or you could carve out a few days in Belize for hiking and really amazing caving. Lots of good transport info here: www.belizebus.wordpress.com

If you need another option for the Guatemala, I love Nebaj for culture and hiking. Rio Dule/Livingston is an option, too, although not high on my list for Guatemala.

My photos with blog, travelogue, and review links on the main page of each collection are below in case you're interested - all my recommendations are embedded there.
Congratulations and happy trails!

An AI hotel in Cancun or Riviera Maya in January for a week will cost you at least $250 per night not including tips (yes it is customary to tip at AIs in Mexico), shopping, tours, this is just for the hotel, no transport or air.
Look into maybe dropping the AI requirement and rent a condo or non AI and eat out part of the time.

Sounds great! We were in Mexico and Guatemala for about five months in 2014, so hopefully can give some suggestions!

Your plan to put the romantic, beach side of the trip in Mexico sounds about right. If it's the Yucatan and romance you're looking at, I would really implore you to consider Tulum over Playa del Carmen and Cancun for the romance and all inclusive resort. It's more Mexican (i.e. there are far less Americans in comparison to the other two places) and authentic than the other two (Playe dle Carmen has a starbucks, Haagen daaz shop and, although a gorgeous beach, was much more commerical than we expected), less crowds, more romance and just a STUNNING part of beach. There are also some ruins and cenotes nearby if you wanted to have a day of adventure.

In Guatemala, we were on a very different budget to you guys but I would certainly suggest in those 14 days to visit Lake Atitlan (gorgeous lake with hiking possibilities and some lovely traditional guatemalan towns) and Antigua (gorgeous colonial town, very touristy but still great) as the places to concentrate on in that time. There are volcano hikes around both, plus beautiful wilderness, so you guys will be able to sample some of that side of Guatemala too.

www.alongdusyroads.com is my site, where there's photos and guides etc for all of the above!
