Food in Bolivia and Peru

Hi

I'm going to Bolivia and Peru in September. What food is a must to try...and are there stuff that I should avoid?

Regards

Cuy could be either something you must try or must avoid. It is roast guinea pig and a staple of Peruvian cuisine.

In Peru I can highly recommend to try the Seviche, a raw marinated fish. People use different kinds of white fish from the sea - depending on the region.
Bolivia got a vast array of typical food, depending if you are on the highlands or in the "oriental" part of the country. There are 200 different kinds of potatoes and also different ways to prepare them. In the low lands people prefer rice, yucca (a root) and plantain (banana for cooking) as side dishes.
A very typical snack is the Salteña, a pastry filled with meat or chicken which people eat in the mornings.
Beware of uncooked vegetables (salads) - just enjoy salads in good restaurants.
There are websites about Bolivia which also mention the food of this country.
Have a good time,
Paul

Going to Peru is an emntire culinary adventure. Peru has one of the great cooking styles of the world. Seviche is good, but there are so many other things - seco de cordero, papas a la huicaina, suspiro limeño, aji de gallina, anticuchos, cau cau to mention just a very few and of course, pisco sours.

gard, so cool that you (and I assume your wife) are going to Peru! I know you from the Asia board and your trip to Japan. I am planning a 3 wk trip to Peru and the Amazon w/my son for next July. I hope you are planning on doing a trip report and pics on your Peru trip! It would be of great help to us.

cheers,
Eileen, emd
