Flying into Cancun or Merida

My wife and I are looking into a midJanuary trip to the Yucatan. Any recommendations on whether it is easier to fly into Merida or Cancun?

I doubt you'll find many, if any, flights directly into Merida, whereas there are lots of flights available directly into Cancun. So if that's what you're referring to, Cancun would most definitely be easier.

If you're referring to location of archaeological sites, well Uxmal would be closer to Merida, definitely, but Chichen Itza is about equally accessible from either Merida or Cancun, while Tulum and Coba are definitely more easily accessible from Cancun. So again Cancun would be easier if that's your focus.

But there are many other possible considerations. It would depend mostly on what you are specifically concerned about or interested in.

You can fly into Merida on Continental or connect through Mexico City on Aeromexico from the US. It is a nice airport and a good way to avoid the hassle of Cancun if you are going to the sites. Of course, Merida is a nice attraction in itself.

Thanks. If we fly into Merida, is it easy to drive from Merida to Tulum without going through Cancun? We'll probably return to the US through Cancun, so we'll see it eventually.

Listen to RobertSDF --- he's got the "good info".

Continental has daily direct flights to Merida (MID) from Houston (IAH). In addition to Aeromexico and Mexicana, you can also get VERY affordable flights into Merida via Mexico City using Aviacsa (who I've grown to love flying).

And yes, you can get to Tulum without going through Cancun --- use the road that goes through Coba (and *DO* take the time to explore the ruins there --- the site is as big as Chichen-Itza, but much less developed and touristy).

Have fun!

Thanks for all the advice. We just booked tickets on Continental to Merida, flying back through Cancun. Any recommendations on places to stay near Chichen Itza?

Also great advice from Tio Gringo! Don't know how I forgot about Aviacsa--I also like them very much.
For Chichen, I always stay in Valladolid. Its a short trip from there and Valladolid is really a nice place where the tourism hasn't destroyed the true Mexican flavor. Great value in hotels--I stay at the Hotel Zaci which charges about 300pesos (less than 30 dollars) and has pool, a/c, cable TV, etc. Located near the zocalo and the bus station.
And do take Tio's advice and stop at Coba! Very impressive and not nearly as overrun with tourists as Chichen and Tulum.
Enjoy!
