first time traveler

I'm taking a small group of students to Costa Rica in July. I have never been myself. We are using an educational tour company. Parents are asking me what the kids should pack. If anyone has suggestions on this and any other advice, it sure would be helpful. Also, how long does the flight take to San Jose from Atlanta?

Where in Costa Rica are you going? If I am not mistaken that is the beginning of the green (rainy) season in some parts. I was there in October of 2001 which was the green season. It also depends on what you are doing while there.

For starters, mosquito repellant, and maybe a light rain jacket. I have a Columbia that is perfect for rain travel. Maybe a sweatshirt and pants. Again, I think it will depend on where you are traveling within the country.

As for the flight. If I remember correctly, it took us about 4 hours to go from Miami to San Jose, give or take a half an hour. So maybe add an hour onto that from Atlanta.

Lots of warm weather clothes, shorts, t-shirts, running shoes, sandals, at least one pair of long pants but no levis, they are too heavy and hot! A light windbreaker for the mountains; hats, sunblock, and insect repellant are also important. A Spanish-English dictionary - a working knowledgeof Spanish would be fantastic - but a warm and accepting attitude along with Senor/Senora, por favor and gracias will get you most everywhere ingood shape! Good luck and have fun! You have your work cut out for you!

What a thrill! Those kids are going to love Costa Rica, as will you! I have flown from Atlanta, and it will take you very close to 4 hours--no longer.

We are going to Arenal, Tortuga Island, rafting, Manuel Antonio, Carara, canopy tour, a volcano (can't remember which one), cloud forest, and some other places, snorkeling, etc. We have 10 days. Any good gift shops in San Jose? I think Inbioparque also. I don't have my schedule on hand.

Fellow Fodorites probably get tired of me mentioning the Hotel Don Carlos, but they DO have a great gift shop with a good selection. Also, all through downtown San Jose there are little shops where you can buy all types of souvenirs.
