Hi:
I have found almost nothing about Fincas Naturales in MA. Does it mean that it is not worth spending time (and money) there? Any info from those who might have been there would be appreciated.

Are you going to be in either the Monteverde or Sarapiqui areas? If so, you can do a night hike for about 1/2 the price.
We were going to do Fincas Naturales, but decided that since we were doing La Tirimbina before to take a pass.

We did the night hike at MV at Children's Eternal Cloudforest and enjoyed it. Saw a sloth, agouti, tarantula, other spiders and heard more animals in the forest. I think it was around $20.
We also did morning guided tours at MV and Santa Elena Reserves. Make sure you hire a guide for best wildlife spotting.
Night hikes are also offered at MV, Hidden Valley among others.

Hey tully, don't forget the tarantulas.
My husband and I did the night hike at Fincas Naturales in MA on our first trip to CR a few years ago. If it's the place with the large butterfly garden then it's the same place. We had a good time and we saw quite a bit of creatures. The only drawback was that we were the only two people on the hike that night so they took longer than planned and we almost missed our dinner reservations. Definitely go to the butterfly garden during the day if you can.

Across the road from Si Como No resort. Spent a delightful 1 1/2 hour tour with a guide through the butterfly exhibit and the reptile exhibit. The guide was very well informed and interesting. Very much like a zoo visit. Butterflies were very beautiful. Close up views of large snakes and crocodiles. A quiet way to spend a few hours.
Oh, we did the night hike at Hidden Valley in Monteverde, and it was so much fun. You head out in your little group with your flashlights and troop around spotting things. We saw a porcupine, an agouti, coati, sloth, tarantula, and a fox which was very cool because I had never seen one. I wanted to see a snake - all these trips to CR, and I have never seen one. I told the guide, so she buzzed everyone else, and they found a tiny one for me in a tree - a snail-eating snake! It was about the size of my pinkie.
Our guide told us that one time (in a 5-year period) they spotted a puma. It let them take pictures and then just moved on. I would have loved it.

Good reason to stay on the trail & with the guide, like they ask. I love the night hikes, especially the bats.
