Favorite place to stay in CR?

What is everyone's favorite place to stay in Costa Rica and why? My husband and I are planning a romantic vacation for next year, and we've just added Costa Rica to our list of possiblities (along with Kauai, Fiji and the Cook Islands). I just came from the Hawaii and SP boards. Tough decision. We're looking for a small, intimate place with great beaches (not overly crowded with young families), lush landscape and friendly people. Safety is important. Any suggestions?

I loved Florblanca in Malpais/Santa Teresa in Costa Rica (www.florblanca.com). Very romantic, relaxing and intimate with wonderful beach (albeit non-swimmable), lush and friendly. I liked it much much more than Kauai which was definitely crowded by Costa Rican standards.

Safety is not an issue there.

We spent two months traveling in CR. My two favorite places
1. Dolphin Quest(by gulfito) you must reach by boat..stay in small bugalow/tree houses, fresh fish night...great swimming (yes with dolphins),natural, very simple. VERY private
2. Luxury spot: nice pool, food
"sin como no" in Manual antoni area very private but more expensive

In Manuel Antonio, you may want to check out Makanda which sounds like it would suit you better than Si Como No.

Also check out Punta Islita.

I think you will probably find Costa Rica a better value for your money than Hawaii or Fiji or the Cooks.

We planned our trip to Costa Rica around smaller accommodations with personal service and they were:

Makanda by the Sea, Manuel Antonio
Bosque del Cabo, Osa Peninsula
FlorBlanca, MalPais

You would surely love any of these hotels.

I second the Bosque del Cabo recommendation on the Osa. While expensive, it's beautiful, relaxing, great food, with tons to do.
