I made 2 postings regarding the El Dorado which are on this bulletin board on 3/6. You can find them if you scroll and look for the topics that have "el dorado" in them.

FYI, I wasn't impressed, wouldn't go back. Good luck. Email me for more info if you need it.
Marianne

We just got back from spending three nights at the El Dorado and then four nights at the Riu Tequila in Playacar. We did enjoy our time at the ElDorado! If you are looking for a remote, quiet location you will like the ElDorado. Some of the advantages, as well as the disadvantages, of the El Dorado are related to its remote location. Our room opened up onto the Caribbean and there were not many people on the beach, it was not crowded at all. Ask for a "quiet" room and you will get some privacy and a better view. There isn't a lot going on there as far as night life. We met some singles who were feeling rather isolated and "stuck". The food was good, as was the service. The stars were very bright at night, because there were't lights from nearby towns. The beach was not great for swimming, but there ween't crowds of people there either. We didn't find there to be any bugs at the ElDorado, there was some snorkeling, but not as good as at Cozueml or Xelha. When we moved to the Riu Tequila for the last four nights of our trip at first we felt as though we'd made a mistake...we missed the beach right outside our front door and the Riu Tequila is not on the beach but across the street from it. However, after the first night we were very glad to have experienced both resorts because of the unique experiences each offer. At the Riu you use the beach out in front of the Riu Yukatan and it is a much better beach than at the ElDorado but it is also much more crowded. Also, the pool areas at the Riu Tequila are much nicer, you have more choices for food, and some nights the entertainment is very good, other nights it is lacking. We ended up making reservations each night at Lupita, where you dine outside, order off a menu, and it is much more intimate than the buffet, cafeteria type dining at the other restaurant. Have a good trip and email me if you want more specific information on the El Dorado. Jan

Dear Lisa.
we just spent 7 nights at the Eldorado
we were expecting a swimable beach, we found that it is built on a reef, a small area to snorkel, so a little
dissapointed. However the food and service was very good, they have 2 great
pools, an outdoor hot tub a spa. It is on about 100 acres, so a lot of space to
wonder, very quiet and restful. no nightlife if that bothers you. I saw no
bugs, the rooms were clean and large but
not 5 star, they each have a private patio and hammock. The resort is between
Playa and Akumal. We snorkled at Akumal
and XaXal it was wonderful. I would go
back because of the all inclusive, it made it easy for us, they also arrange
transportation to and from the airport
that is included in the room price.
Good Luck

I stayed at the ElDorado a year ago and enjoyed it. I was a little taken aback by the colors of the stucko buildings (bright colors), and the grounds seemed somewhat simple. But after getting to know the staff, sampling the restaurants and enjoying the quiet beach, I soon started enjoying the atmosphere as well. Definitely not a glitzy 5 star resort! It was clean and the staff was more than friendly.
