Driving Belize border to Tikal?

After checking with a couple of tour companies, they want to charge around $250/person for an overnight to Tikal (from San Ignacio). I have been reading so many forums trying to figure out what the best way to go since we will have a rental car in Belize. Is it that safe to drive to Tikal with just 2 people? Or is it better to spend $500 and take a tour. It just seems like a lot of money. This really has been the toughest part of trying to figure out our trip. Any help would be appreciated!

Only a few rental agencies will allow you to cross the border into Guatemala and those few can not offer vehicle insurance. The road from the border to Tikal is pretty good now. You could catch a mini van on the Guate side of the border, transfer to Tikal and spend the night in one of the lodges in the park. Then find a mini van to return you the next day. Or spend the night on the island village of Flores. They'll be transport from the site later afternoon. Then return to Belize from Flores. But you should be able to arrange a package for two with transfers, guided tours and hotels for less than 500.00 for two.

Katie gave you good info.

If you do it on your own -- that is, cross the border at Benque, get a van, arrange your own lodging in Flores (you can get a nice place in Flores for less than US$50) or at the park, including meals, exit fee from Belize (US$18.75) and park entrance -- you can do it for under US$200.

That's under US$200 for two persons.

Thanks everyone for the information - it has been a big help. I also felt that was way too expensive. We are going to go ahead and drive the rental car to Tikal and hopefully stay safe!
