I am looking for some help, suggestions, thoughts regarding my situation. Husband left me to plan a one week vacation in August for us and our two daughters, 11 and 6. He originally said he'd prefer to drive somewhere rather than fly this trip. Him and I vacationed in Cabo one time 12 years and had a blast (but of course we had no kids then). We've had two pretty bad trips to Cancun, the last one just this past April with our girls (who had a fabulous time!). When we left Cancun, my husband said he'd never return to Mexico. His suggestions for this summer included the California coastline (we live in Los Angeles), Lake Tahoe, or San Francisco. I spent weeks trying to figure out where in driving vicinity we should go, focusing on finding a luxury resort in a desirable area that would satisfy the whole family, and was striking out when I randomly came upon an opportunity to rent a 2 bedroom villa at Esperanza Resort in Cabo San Lucas (which seems to be pure paradise) for a mere fraction of the going rate -- basically we can get the villa for the entire WEEK for only a couple hundred dollars more than it's regular NIGHTLY rate (i.e, $2200 for seven nights instead of the somewhere between $1600 - $2000 per night. My husband said NO WAY -- he doesn't want to go to Mexico. THis would be my an ideal vacation for us, and since our girls never want to venture away from our hotel much wherever we go, I know that they would be in heaven with both the resort surroundings and a 2400 square foot luxury villa with their own bedroom, bathroom, and terrace. I only have until Monday to secure the villa, otherwise it will be offered to other interested parties. HELP!! What should I do?

duh, don't go to Cabo. It's a great deal but if your husband doesn't want to go then you really have no other option. I don't think trying to convince him to go is fair for him. Put yourself in his shoes and then reavaluate what you should do.

I agree with the poster above. Also your daughters are not going to want to venture outside the resort unless you take them! How else will they start appreciating and experiencing the places they visit?

I'm not great with my American geography or the travel times, but why don't you go to Grand Canyon or up to works Denver or Utah...national parks or something? I've never been to San Francisco but I heard it's one of the best American cities...why not experience what a place has to offer instead of the their free food/drinks and pool? This way you're respecting your husband's wishes and seeing your own country.

The reason the rates are so low in August is because it's hurricane season, and even if you miss out on a storm it's still very hot and muggy in Cabo. August is probably the most unpleasant time of the year to be there.

Listen to hubby and book something at Tahoe where it's cool, assuming the fires are out and the air quality has returned.

I won't weigh in on whether to make your husband go or not, but I will say that I have stayed at the Esperanza three times now and it is absolutely heaven!! We have always stayed at the resort but have toured one of the villas and walked around the villa pools, etc. Esperanza is a stunning resort with fantastice service and incredible views. With the price you are getting I would jump on it!!

There are three things that I would mention. The first is that the beach at the resort is fairly rocky so you have to be very careful when going in the ocean, in all honesty not exactly a swimming beach but the pools are ideal. Second when we have been there we have not noticed many kids, but then we have always been there in Feb. In the villas' clubhouse there are a pictures of all the owner's families and they show a lot of kids. Third, the weather. I have never been there that time of year, but should be pretty hot and humid.

I just want to mention that I had a similar impression of Mexico and really didn't want to go, but hubby wanted to. He knew he would have to make a good impression and the Esperanza was just the ticket. It is not located close to other resorts so you definitely won't get that Cancun feel. We rarely even go to Cabo San Lucas, but mostly head to San Jose del Cabo, a very charming smaller town with cute shops and great restaurants.

My husband says to say that as nice as it looks on the website - it is even more spectacular!! Good luck!

I don't think the question is really about Cabo, good or bad. Or about that particular resort. Your husband doesn't want to go again to Mexico, and I would respect that.

Forcing a destination on someone, is just too much pressure on everyone imho.

Go to Lake Tahoe. The Hyatt at Incline is nice and has a nice beach. Fires should not be a problem at this point.

We leave to Tahoe in 10 days. Can't wait.

I've toured the Esperanza Villas, and if somebody offered me this deal, I'd take it in a heartbeat. They are just gorgeous, absolutely perfect. If you don't take the deal, pass it on to me.

I really appreciate all of the input and have taken the smart advice to accept my husband's lack of desire to go to Cabo, although I cannot deny that it pains me greatly to pass up an opportunity that we will never again have to stay at Esperanza. That being said, I am still struggling immensely in trying to figure out where we should go. You see, we've already done the CA coastline; I, too, love S.F., but not as our weeklong summer vacation destination; the good places to stay in Yosemite are booked; the great resorts up north (like Ventana Inn, Meadowwood, Post Ranch Inn, etc., are adults-only); although my husband suggested Tahoe, I really don't think it's the right place for us. We went to an amazing lakefront family resort in Ontario, Canada a couple years ago and neither my husband nor my girls would set foot in the beautiful lake or engage in any of the lake activities, nor do we hike, bike, etc., so I'm not sure how my husband thinks we'll fill our week. We usually enjoy vacations in warm destinations that have fabulous pools, beautiful grounds, luxurious rooms, fine dining, and a great spa, topped off with a couple of half-day excursion/sightseeing trips. The best options that meet this criteria and are within driving distance are in the San Diego area, which we've done many times. Any further suggestions or ideas from you savvy world travelers?

Go to Tahoe. It sounds like from your posts that you seem to go on beach vacations more often then not. Maybe your husband wants something different. What's wrong with going where he wants to? It sounds like he doesn't have much say in anything in your household. And don't be so negative, I doubt you will never be able to get a good deal like this one ever again. I also doubt that your husband will never return to Mexico. Maybe he's just tired of the same vacation. He will back, we all go back.

Lake Tahoe is beautiful. We are big hikers or water sport nuts, but we still love Tahoe.

Yes, I realized I am being quite negative -- shame on me! Last summer we went to Grand Wailea and had a great time. Maybe I'll suggest a different island, although at the last minute, the good resorts are likely full and flight prices very high. (there I go being negative again My in-laws live in Vegas and both hubby and I spent our childhood vacations with burnt shoulders in a hotel pool while our folks gambled, so Vegas is probably not in the picture. I did consider Lake Las Vegas, however. I'm leaning towards and further researching Lake Tahoe. As you stated, my husband expressed an interest in going there, so I should go with his request. Any help on what area to stay in and particular resorts in Lake Tahoe? It seems that Hyatt Incline Village is a good option. I'm gonna post in the California forum for some input, but if any of you helpful individuals have any other suggestions I should look into, I'd appreciate it. Thanks for your time and valuable input!!

Hawaii is never ever as hot and humid as Cabo in August or September.

Actually, August is very nice in Hawaii. Being a group of very small islands surrounded by the enormity of the Pacific Ocean, the climate is very stable, and there is a regular pattern of trade winds.

Cabo, however, is subject to the seasonal monsoon flows in August and September that are famous for hurricanes and flash floods.
