The Laboratorio Nacional de Aguas de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (national water laboratory) recently tested the water at 100 beaches in Costa Rica. Eight beaches posed pollution problems which inluded Tarcoles and Quepos. I am trying to locate the report to find the other six beaches.

What is negative about this report? In fact it is positive showing that a country is doing an excellent job of keeping their beaches in good order. I

For all Costa Rica's good press about environmental consciousness, the reality on the ground can be a different story. There are beaches with some pollution problems. Fortunately, it's not many, but I'm all for exposing them and shaming them into getting their acts together. Visitors need to be aware too.

Agree with Jeff. Not long ago I posted about how (IMO) the water and beaches near Puerto Vallarta must be among the filthiest in all of Mexico. The rivers there dump all kinds of trash and debris right into the bay. I shudder to think of the amount of human and animal fecal matter. It looks fine in the dry season, but when the rains come, hijole. But nobody wants to hear it. I had a friend whose 22 year old son died there from an amoeba in the brain after snorkeling in that toilet.
