There is a great little roadside restaurant north of Puntarenas as you are driving toward Liberia, but before you get to Canas and turn east toward Tileran. There is a large gas stations on the left side (the restaurant is on the right). It is located at the intersection where you turn left on highway 18 to drive across the Friendship Bridge to the Nicoya Peninsula. Excellent food, good service. Often monkeys in the trees, interesting 3 legged dog at the gift shop next door and some deer on the property behind the gift shop. Nice place to take a break! There is also a little soda and pastry shop near the gift shop!

Gracias everyone for helping me with my itinerary. Getting ready for christmas is swallowing up all my free time so I can't get on-line as much as I'd like.

Costa Rica is a busy travel board...by the time I finish shopping/wrapping my question will probably have dropped down to message #275 and I'll never be able to find it!

Well so far I've got destinations chosen (fly into San Jose, visit Arenal, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio.) I am debating between different hotels. but I need to get my airline tickets...I'm worried the flights will fill up before I have a chance to do that.

Talk to you all later.

MELIISA5,
Wew stayed in the luxury suite which had a hot tub on the balcony. And the view was perfect! Every room has the same view! We were able to see some of the other rooms and they were just as nice! We had the luxury suite b/c we were there for our honeymoon.
The pool is so nice! they have 2 pools the "top" pool is heated and it over flows to the "bottom" pool which is not. They have a little cabana area also around the pool.
The wildlife was great! We saw monkeys, birds, etc. The hanging bridges were walking distance from the hotel, which made for a nice hike. they also had other trails to walk on, however, we never made it to them.
The grounds are just beautiful!
The food at the resturant is sooooo gooood! And we were only a 10-15 min drive to town. However, we enjoyed staying at the hotel better for dinner than the resturants that we ate at in town. Let me know if you have any other questions

Sooo hard to choose a hotel...but also fun to consider the options. For Arenal the Lost Iguana, Arenal Paraiso, and Tabacon Hot Springs and Resort sound good...
The Lost Iguana sounds like it has nice rooms, private jacuzzi is a choice, and nice grounds with wildlife, nice pool...currently has a volcano lava view but I wonder how much the lava flow will move by June...

Tabacon Hot Springs and Resort is mainly good for the luxury of having unlimited access to the hot springs...and although the hotel has rooms with volcano lava view, apparently some of the rooms don't have a view so you may end up without a volcano view...

If we don't stay at Tabacon resort, I'll have a hard time convincing my husband to pay the fee for use of the hot springs for all 5 of us, whereas it's included if you stay at the resort. Also if we don't stay at Tabacon resort we'll likely only have time to use the hot springs once...

Arenal Paraiso has a good view of the volcano lava flow and many people on-line like it, but the configuration of beds isn't ideal...When I looked on the web site I believe it said they have double beds and only 2 rooms have king beds. I prefer to share a queen or king bed with husband...Well, anyway, Paraiso looks nice but probably not as much luxury as the Lost Iguana seems to have...

DANMIN, thanks for the info on the Lost Iguana! Sounds really tempting...

Basically in Arenal I'm looking for the right accomodations to put my family of 5 into 2 rooms, with comfort, good food, nice pool or jacuzzi or both, and good volcano view if we get lucky enough to see the lava flow...

I do also wonder how much the lava flow will change between now and June...aparently it's been moving north...

Mellisa5,
We were told a little tip about the hotsprings and we found very affordable. DIRECTLY, accross the street from Tabacon are hot springs that you can do for $8 a person. It was so nice! We heard that Tabacon can be VERY crowded. I can't remember the name of the place but you can't miss it. We went at night and really enjoyed it, during the day it is just to hot to be sitting in hot water. And honestly, one visit was enough for us!
While we were in C.R. we meet some people that were staying at Tabacon, and none of them had a nice thing to say about it. They all said it is just an older hotel living on its name. But, everyone has a different opinon.

I'm having some trouble pinpointing the exact location of the Lost Iguana. But from what I can put together from various sources, it appears to be past Tabacon towards the lake.

The further you get from Tabacon in that direction, the less of the lava flow you see. If one of your objectives is to see the volcano at its best (a hit or miss proposition, but well worth it if you hit), then I would be concerned about the exact location of the Lost Iguana. It might be fine, but given the directions they provide, I'd want to have a map showing the exact location.

Melissa--you are correct that Arenal Paraiso is not a luxury property. But it is not spartan either. It is modern and comfortable and has all the conveniences and service one would expect of a quality resort--at least in the superior bungalows.

Aha! Found a map showing Lost Iguana. Looks as though you will be able to see some lava flow, but certainly not the best view.

http://www.arenal.net/arenal-costa-rica-map.htm

The best area to see it would be between Los Lagos and Tabacon Resort. Looking at this map, ideal would be Los Lagos to Fuego Arenal, and probably Tabacon though it looks to be at a sharp side angle to some of the main flow lines.

Depends on whether you're going to Arenal for the volcano/lava experience, or for the luxury resort experience.

What is the main event in Arenal? Well, if we witness the lava flow from our hotel room, this will certainly be the main event. If we miss the lava flow, then the main event will be the "luxury" resort, hot springs, or wildlife sightings!

RufusTFirefly, you are certainly handy with a map. Thanks for trying to enlighten me on hotel locations. I am geographically challenged.

Danmin, thanks for the tip about the option of cheaper hot springs...

Tabacon Hot Springs and Resort, Arenal Paraiso, or the Lost Iguana...eenie, meenie, minie, moe...

For Monteverde I like El Sapo Dorado and Fonda Vela...

For Manuel Antonio I think Hotel Si Como No sounds like it offers something for the whole family (my husband and I, 23-year-old son, daughters age 18 and 19.)

I'm going to live vicariously by signing up my husband, son, and daughters for the Original Canopy tour in Monteverde...do you all think this is the best choice for them? There's also Sky Trek but I thought the Original Canopy tour sounded better...Meanwhile I'll be back at the ranch writing cloud forest poetry...

To confuse you some more, we did the Selvatura canopy tour and bridges in Monteverde. Very nice. I've got photos of our trip, including canopy tour and night hike in Monteverde, Arenal Paraiso grounds, Cano Negro boat tour, Volcan Arenal from our bungalow during the day, etc.

I don't have them posted anywhere (haven't had time to look for a free web site to post them on), but if you want me to email you some, let me know.

RufusTFirefly, thanks for the web-site showing the map of Arenal hotel locations and lava flow spots...what a great resource!

I'd love to see your photos...including the ones taken from the Arenal Paraiso...Since you've stayed there, maybe you can answer a question for me. I usually prefer 2 bedrooms for the 5 of us...one for my husband and I, and one for the 3 "kids" (ages 23, 18, and 19). Looks like Arenal Paraiso has individual cabins or bungalows...Is it possible to get 2 bedrooms close together? The superior bungalows with glassed-in porches sound nice. I can't tell if they have 2-bedroom bungalows? (I'll probably have to write to them and ask.)

Anyway thanks for offering to share your photos. Please e-mail me and mention Arenal/Costa Rica in the subject line so I'll know you aren't junk mail...
[email protected]

We'll be staying in Arenal and Monteverede, and also in Manuel Antonio.
Gracias!

I've made a lot of progress on planning our exciting trip to Costa Rica for my family of 5, thanks to you all! I'm posting more questions here because my other threads have disappeared!

JESSIE: Why aren't you crazy about the Monteverde Lodge? (I'm about to make reservations at either El Sapo Dorado, Fonda Vela, or Monteverde Lodge.)
Also, where is the fun disco, La Cascada, that you mentioned?

DCMALIA: Did you see wildlife on El Sapo Dorado grounds?

Updated itinerary:
Days 1 and 2: San Jose. Arrive 8:30 pm. Spend 2 nights at Hotel Grano de Oro or Hotel Le Bergerac. (Hotel Le Bergerac is a total of $100 cheaper!)

Days 3, 4: Rent 4-wheel-drive and drive it to Arenal. Spend 2 nights at Arenal Paraiso, Tabacon, or Lost Iguana...Can't decide...

Days 5, 6, 7: Monteverde. Spend 3 nights at El Sapo Dorado, Fonda Vela, or Monteverde Lodge...Family will do canopy tour (not me!)

Days 8, 9, 10, 11: Manuel Antonio for 4 nights. See the park, beach, and also do day-trip to Carrara Preserve to see scarlet macaws in the morning.

Day 12: Drive from Manuel Antonio to San Jose and spend 1 last night near airport. Hotel?

Day 13: Fly home in morning. (My son will fly home 2 days earlier from Quepos to San Jose to home.)

Muchas gracias! Any comments welcome.

Oh my gosh, you are all providing such great information but now I am confused and nervous I might mess up my trip in March with my husband.
I only have a week and this was my plan. Please advise me if you have any better suggestions.

3/8 Arrivie late in San Jose and stay in the downtown Best Western
3/9 drive to Arenal and spend two nights at the Lost Iguana in one of the suites.
I don't think there is enough time for me go to Monte Verde so I thought we would do a Canopy excersion in Arenal. Any comments on that?
3/11 drive to Tamarindo to stay at the Flamingo Beach resort for 4 nights.
3/14 head back to San Jose to spend another night at the Best Western to catch Plane following morning.

Does anyone know how long it take to drive between San Jose and Arenal and between Arenal and Tamarindo?

It seems that most of you all went to Manuel Antonio instead of Tamarindo. Any reason for this? Have I made the wrong choice?

Do you think I should shorten my stay at the beach to spend one night in Monte Verde?

Would love your feed back.

Donna

It's a great plan--relax! Tamarindo is a funky little town; some don't care for it, we've always liked it. It is in the province of Guanacaste, cattle grazing country. Manuel Antonio is further south (central rather than northern Pacific) in an area of tropical "moist" forest. More wildlife (animals) in immediate area due to proximity of jungle. Both are interesting places, depending on what you are interested in.

San Jose-Arenal is about 3 hours
Arenal-Tamarindo more like 4 hours
Tamarindo back to San Jose--5 hours.

Stay with your itinerary; it's just fine.

Shillmac, Jessie, Faithie, and everyone, thanks so much for all your help. I've got all my hotels and a basic plan for our 1st family trip to Costa Rica in June! Now I can relax and fill in the details.

Also I'm in the process of choosing trip insurance. www.insuremytrip is a great web-site and they answer questions. Our independent trip, which includes some splurges, will cost under $6,000 for 5 people for 12 nights including airfare and 2 hotel rooms per night, and including trip insurance.

Shillmac, remember we were both wondering if our Blue Shield plans include medical coverage in other countries? I called Blue Shield and learned our plan does include emergency medical coverage in other countries including costa Rica. I was so happy I hung up without asking what about non-emergency coverage, such as for a sore throat?

You can compare costs for buying a package of insurance coverage for a trip on www.insuremytrip.com. Our package will include medical, medical evacuation, trip cancellation and trip interruption, and other problems. The cost varies with your ages and with the cost of your trip. Pre-existing conditions are included only if you buy the insurance within 15 days of making the first pre-payment on any part of your trip. (Oops, too late for us, but luckily we don't have any pre-existing conditions anyway.)

I ended up booking 2 nights at Hotel Le Bergerac in San Jose; 2 nights at the Lost Iguana resort in Arenal; 3 nights at the Monteverde Lodge (the only one that wasn't fully booked); 4 nights at the Hotel Si Como No (our splurge; and they're offering free room upgrades for the rainy season); and 1 night at the Hotel Bougainvillea (good price and excellent cancellation policy).

Thanks everyone for your encouragement!

Melissa, good for you! I think you've made some very wise decisions; and I'm sure it is a relief to have the details in place. The price of your package seems reasonable for 12 nights, 2 rooms, and insurance. You've done well. So glad to know the Blue Cross info. We are with a Blue Cross subsidiary group, so I need to check further to see if they are under the umbrella as far as out of country coverage goes.

You are going to have such a wonderful time. How was Hawaii? I hope you and your husband enjoyed your anniversary trip and came home relaxed and refreshed! Congratulations on whichever one this is! We have our 30th coming up this year. Still wondering where the time goes!

Shillmac, looking forward to Costa Rica, and Maui was great for anniversary trip with hubby, thanks for asking. It was a romantic splurge trip. Though Maui is beautiful it's sad to see that there's almost no primary forest left...we're looking forward to seeing some primary forest in Costa Rica! It's tough vacationing with a biologist...I'm always hearing, "Wow, this is really beautiful...but this isn't native!"

Picture this...we're driving up to Haleakala crater on Maui, we stop for a walk through a peaceful forest, I hear bird-song all around me...but hubby says, "I'm only seeing 2 species of birds! What happend to all the birds?!" Hey, it's all lovely birdsong to me, they all tweet!

Costa Rica with a biologist husband should be very interesting...

Yep, he'll think he's died and gone to heaven! I'll be anxious to hear your thoughts about it when you return. Haleakala brings back some wonderful family memories. What a beautiful sunrise with the clouds all gathered down in the crater! We came down and took off on the Hana Highway that day with our 3 kids passed out in the back seat. They couldn't believe we had gotten them up at 3:00 in the morning for the drive up Haleakala! But they liked it once we were there, thank goodness!
