Costa Rica Airfare from NYC
Dear All,
After a fantastic trip to BsAs last April, my wife and I are now questing after Costa Rica. Does anyone have guidelines as to what is a good fare for a direct flight from NYC? We'd like to go direct and are looking to go mainly during April 19th to the 28th (for about a seven day period during that span). The best I've found so far is 664 USD for 2 roundtrip tickets (332 USD each) on TACA (April 20 to 27) - it's a direct flight. This sounds very good to me and after reviewing the 30 day graphs on kayak.com, I'm almost ready to make the purchase but am admittedly a bit hesitant due to inadequate research. Any thoughts?
Thanks all,
DKG50

That's a great price. In my experience the airfare averages $500pp from NY. I haven't traveled in April but have paid the $500 for trips in Feb, June & Sept. I did luck out this year & got $357pp on Taca during President's week! We're counting down the days!

I bought 4 tickets in early October for mid February on Delta from JFK to SJO, paid $259 total each, nonstop, depart am and return in the afternoon.
I found them on Kayak as well, and have been told it's a great fare.

Yes, the time has come to almost buy. I'm torn because Lacsa has a flight for 250USD and Continental has a flight for 330USD. The Lacsa flight has awful times (6:20am departure and 1:20am return to the states). Any thoughts?

I honestly don't think you are going to find anything cheaper than this. If you can live with the odd times, grab the $250 fare. Otherwise grab the $330 one. Those fares may not be available for long.

Any other thoughts? I think that the Lacsa timetable has a strong chance to ruin the first day entirely. We're only going for 7 days as it is so I think a good quality of sleep and preparedness is important for the trip...

Both American Airlines and Continental are offering very good fares to Latin America through May. Not sure if Costa Rica is included but you may want to check it out. Not sure if it's out of NYC but it is through Newark.

I'd stick with CO. With only 7 days, I wouldn't want to deal with TACA's schedule. And I don't think you're going to do better. Our flights from IAH - SJO last year were slightly higher than that.

I would also fly with Continental. If you go to the trip advisor site and look up Honduras forum( I know you are not going there) you will find many complaints about Taca. I don't think it would be worth the savings to get delayed, lose your luggage ect.. Have a great trip

Honest. I just don't think you're going to find anything better. The longer you wait to book, the better the chance is that these fares will disappear. If you have definite dates in mind and can live with the terms of the fare, I'd grab it now.
TACA/LACSA is just fine. I wouldn't have any qualms about flying with them. The times are odd and could be inconvenient for your needs. That's the only problem. If that's the case, go Continental.
But grab it soon.

I know, I know...time is of the essence. I was up a little later than normal last night and was searching on three sites simultaneously for about an hour: vayama.com, kayak.com, and delta.com. There was an elusive 275USD taxes included direct Delta flight that kept on showing up but then kept on being unavailable when I tried to book it. This morning, the corridor I want is back up to 330. Alas, the time is running out and I will make a decision soon - thanks for all of help and advice and happy travels!
