Coba is much less developed than the other 2 sites, but we enjoyed it. We rented a car and drove from Tulum, where we were staying. It was a few years ago, but I remember my legs were really sore for a few days after climbing one of the pyramids - very high!

I absolutely LOVE Coba, but then I'm kind of a nut for archaelogical stuff. Coba is cool because it is remote and rustic and it isn't jam packed with 270 tour buses a day (though their parking lot could probably handle that many ;-)

If you want to see some photos and my trip report of a recent visit to Coba, check out my web page:
http://www.tiogringo.com/coba.html

I highly recommend a day trip out to Coba. It's not that hard to do, and it's a wonderful site!!

Have fun!
Mark

Even though I'm not a ruins freak like my husband I actually enjoyed Coba more than Tulum. It's not as touristy. The sheer size of the site and all the un-excavated ruins captures the imagination like nothing else. As hot as it was the middle of the jungle, the very long walk back along the quiet, shady road (from the main pyramid back to the entrance) remains in my memory. Sounds corny I know, but the lack of hundreds of tour bus groups made exploring it that much more enjoyable.

Thank you TioGringo! - What great pictures and summaries on your site. That does it. We are going to Coba, I think this is the type of Ruins my husband has envisioned. Thank you everyone!
Cindy

You might also be interested in some of the smaller sites. I can't recall the name of the place, but it was near the Belize border. We drove through the entrance where we met a car leaving - and that was it. No one else there! It felt like we were discovering it ourselves.
