Cayo Espanto - Ever been there?
Has anyone been to Cayo Espanto in Belize (www.aprivateisland.com)? I am very intested in what I have learned, but would like to know if the service and accomodations are as nice as they seem. And the food!

We love Belize and we stayed at many different and wonderful places including Cayo Espanto. It is not too bad place with very average service, beds too hard and food less than satisfying. We still had a pleasant time but we would never spend $750 per night if we knew what was there. We could pay much, much less in a few great places in San Pedro area with better service and food. We love Victoria's House and it is much cheaper.

Victoria House has wondeful 2 and 3 bdrm houss on the beach with fully equitped kitchens. Not sure when the respondant visited CE, but they have new mgmt out there and hopefully they've worked out the problems she complained about.

There is another grreat hotel being built right now off of Placencia, also on a private caye, that will be similar to CE, but not sure when it's due to open.

If you'd ike me to get you info, email me at [email protected] and I'll call and find out for you.

Katie Valk
Maya Travel Services

We stayed there last January and my advice is: Save money and go somewhere else. We never stayed at Victoria House but we heard many positive things about it.

This message is for Travel Agent Katie Volk:
I do not know why you are thinking that you have a right to use this site for commercial promotion. Read rules of this forum. Isn't Belize forum enough for you? I am sending this complain to Fodor's.

I've just gone over what I've written and found it informational and helpful. I can not find the commercialism you object to, other than offering my email addres if these peple wanted more info I didn't have at my fingertips.

The fact that I work in tourism should not preclude the fact that I am in a very good position to offer suggestions for accommodations and tours that I have stayed and participated in and have lots of very good feedback on.

In fact, I think my insights are quite valuable and have steered many people in the right direction. I am sorry if I have offended you, but I believe my contributions have been welcomed by those who requested the information.

Best wishes

Katie Valk

We stayed at Cayo Espanto in November 1999 while some cabanas were still under construction so we got a great rate. Four couples rented the entire island and we had a blast (except for the tropical storm that blew threw). We thought the food was great and the service was superb. You definetly have to have the mindset that there is nothing to do on the island but sleep, read, layout, eat and party. I don't know if I would pay the prices now.
