Cancun/Islands
We're going to Cancun the end of the month and staying at the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach for four nights. Then we're meeting our boat and staying on that for a week. Where's there a good marina?? I want good restaurants, shopping, etc. Our choices seem to be either Isla Mujeres or Cozumel. Any recommendations? Thanks alot. I really appreciate your help because we've never been to Mexico before and are a little concerned about safety, food problems, etc.

Hi Dee, you won't have to worry about the food or water in Cancun. As a matter of fact you'll feel like you haven't even left the States(well almost). The prices in and around Cancun are extremely high in comparison with the rest of Mexico. You can get things cheaper in Florida. Cozumel is probably your best bet for shopping. Have fun!!
both Isla and Cozumel are great. No saftey issues either place and all food
is safe. Isla gets its water from Cancun. We don't drink it cause it tastes like typical big city water--but it sure is safe. Isla is about half the price of Cozumel. If you are living on a boat than we would definately recommend Isla because of a great protected harbor. We have a 15 page travel document on Isla which we can forward if you are interest.
Dan and Ginny
You are staying at one of the highest rated hotels on the island. There is plenty of shopping on Cancun, there are many malls and outdoor fleamarkets. There are tons of restaurants on and dowmtown Cancun. I live in NYC and have been to Cancun many times, the prices are reasonable. As amatter of fact I find some of the restaurants dirt cheap. We make out well with the currancy exchange. Deal in pesos, because you will get pesos back for change with US dollars and it short changes you in the long run. I stay at the sister hotel the Fiesta Americana Cancun, and you are in a perfect location. The food is not a problem it's the over indulgence that gets folks sick. If you stick to bottled water for drinking and stay away from little taco stands in the street downtown you will be just fine. We have never had a problem withour stomachs. It is in the best intrest of the hotels to make sure that you don't get sick, you get sick...you don't come back....smile. Have a wonderful time.

Hi Dee,

We went to Cancun at the end of March. The Fiesta Americana Coral Beach is THE most beautiful hotel. The pool area is absolutely incredible. Unfortunately, we didn't stay there, just went snooping around. If I ever went back, I would love to stay there. We did a day trip to Isla Mujeres, and it was the highlight of my trip. I didn't care for Cancun very much, since it is way over commercialized. You get the feel of Mexico when you go to Isla. We rented golf carts and tooled the whole island, then went for some sun at Playa Norte. It is gorgeous there, and the surf was not as rough as Cancun. You will find some great shopping on Isla as well...just remember to NEVER pay the price they are asking! Also, for restaurants in Cancun, right next to your hotel is a great place called Maria Bonita. Very pretty, authentic, and live mariachi music. It was great. Have fun! Suanne
