Cancun and Hurricane Ivan

Has Cancun been affected by Hurricane Ivan? Any Fodorites traveling in Cancun/Riviera Maya able to report regarding current conditions there? Any damage to the resorts or the beach?

I have good friends in Cozumel and spoke to them daily. The effects of Ivan were minimal there--just some moderate wind and a little rain. Would assume Cancun is much the same.

Just learned that they evacuated tourists and residents from Cancun, Isla Mujeres and surrounding areas. Cancun airport is closed as well as Cozumel's. I do not know the extent of any damage as yet.

Don't think you folks need to worry much. Isla Mujeres, Puerto Morelos, Holbox and a couple of other low-lying areas did fall under some evacuation orders, although I didn't hear any of that about Cancun. I'm here in Playa del Carmen and things look fine, just like they would look the day after a storm. Some parts of the beach did take some damage -- notably Capitan Tutix, for example -- while other areas just have extra sand, and some of them a LOT of extra sand.

Cancun is live and stand, no big damages are reported at the present time. There were a little wind and some showers, but the weather today it's getting better.
But of course, the beach area as not as long as before.
All the beaches have the red flags.
The goverment start working to clean the beaches and downtown. All the resorts are working ok, the resorts who have to evacuated their guest were those on Isla Mujeres and HolBox, also Punta Allen.

The Cozumel airport was closed briefly but flights to both Cancun and Cozumel are now operating normally. No evacuations in either of the resorts but some in some of the smaller resort areas as indicated by Ryberg.

Would agree with Ryberg. Should be no problems in that area--south of Cancun/Playa. They were very fortunate--very little impact on this area.
