Scarlett, I have not been to the cemetary in Paris but the Recoleta one is not to be missed. It kind of reminds me of the New Orleans ones with everything above ground. I bought a rose outside to put on Evita's monument and it cost about 65 cents.

Polly, Great trip report. Enjoyed re-living BA and remembering all those great looking men. Surpised about the prices at Galleria Pacifico, the well known designer stores were US priced, but I found the local ones reasonable.
In fact, if I went back, I would bring less clothes and do a little more shopping locally (if my luggage was lost, I don't think it would be a really bad thing
.
BTW, if you are reading this cmcfong, I finally remembered to look at my labels, the clothes are from a store called "Ted Bodin", they are on the first floor in the Alto Palermo Mall, same area, across the hall downstairs from Prune (you'll understand if you go there).
How I am longing to return to AR, but alas, after starting to plan another trip, the expense is starting to rise and we really want to go to the Galapagos Islands next year...so AR will have to wait and I will continue to live vicariously through these reports!

Enjoyed the great trip report, and it was wonderful to remember our recent trip! The food and wine were wonderful and now after 2 weeks the scale is back to before the trip!
For those looking for non tourist restuarants, we enjoyed the LaParollaccia on Riobamba just off Sante Fe. It had wonderful homemade pastas and other Italian meals with dinners for two and a bottle of wine usually under $30 usd. It opens at 8, and is full of locals by 9:30. Also for beef we enjoyed the LaCabana (www.lacabanabuenosaires.com.ar) which was highly recommended by our BA friend for the best beef. It was pricey compared to other meals, but not as high or touristy as Cabana Las Lilas. It seemed we were the only non locals there the night we ate there, but it was full. We had a memorable evening with our friend!
I do confirm avrooster's recommendation to use only radio taxi service. Our only bad experience in BA came even using the service of the hotel to call the radio taxi to go to a reception lunch in Puerto Madero. It was at a newly renovated hotel, and the driver did not know where it was (and didn't tell us) so took us to the Hilton (English speaking must really want the Hilton, right???). With limited Spanish, I always have places written down for the cabs, but that didn't help our driver! I agree with Sweet Polly the Hilton Hotel is beautiful and very helpful since they knew the hotel we wanted was six blocks away. It wasn't a problem to walk there, so all ended well with another delicious feast!
Also the cemetery and San Telmo are both fascinating places for history as well as people watching. There were items at the San Telmo market I have no idea what they were, but it was a great place to spend a sunny afternoon! BA is just a wonderful place to enjoy! Can't wait to return again and again.

La Cabana used to be a clasic restaurant for parrilla, the very, very best. However it was sold, I believe, itchanged its location. Now I guess it must be also very good but it is not the old famous place of years ago,and also it is much more expensive.

We are using DAL skymiles on partners Avianca (MEX-EZE) and AeroMexico (SCL-MEX). Only way in the last two years to get Business seats via DAL.
May miss a meal or two, but Ambien is our tour guide on international flights now.

What a fun and amusing recounting of your adventures in BsAs sweet_polly! Sorry your impression of La Boca was so dismal. We went on a Saturday and it was filled with artisans booths, an amazing stilt walker, tango dancers, music and festivity! We thoroughly enjoyed our time there.
We were particularly interested in the area because my husband's grandfather (he never knew him) went from Italy to BsAs to work, and it was rather nostalgic to think we may have walked in his footsteps.
We knew it was an area to be beware of at night, or away from the activities, but I have some great pictures I took there and we enjoyed seeing Los Caminitos--my grandfather-in-law may have had a hand in building some of them.

avrooster...I had our wonderful multilingual tour guide's (Rosa Aboueid) private email address, but I did not want to post it until I contacted her for her permission. She did reply and give it today...she is available for private tours as well as tours through Friendlyvisit. She is a veritable encyclopedia/history book on Buenos Aires and gaucho history...and speaks English VERY well. <[email protected]>
