Best day for Chichi?

I am traveling to Guatemala in March and would like to know the best day to go to the market at Chichi. Some websites say Thursday and Sunday are market days, but others say Wednesday and Saturday are the best days. Can anyone clarify?

Also, I would like to see them set up the market as some people say that is as interesting as the market itself. What time should I be there to watch that? Thank you for your help.

The market days in Chichi are Thursday and Sunday. If you visit as a day trip from Antigua or Lake Atitlán you'll be there with hordes of other visitors during the heart of the day. If you head there the night before, you get to see the market set up the evening before and early in the morning and can leave before the hordes arrive. I've only been on the weekend so can't compare with Thursday. The activities on the steps of the church are a highlight for me so I'm thinking Sunday would be best. Either day, don't miss the huge produce market in the commercial building on the north edge of the square. Happy trails!

I'll be in Panajachel Wednesday, staying overnight, and going to Antigua late afternoon on Thursday. Wish I had more time, but I don't. Maybe I can make my way to Chichi early Thursday morning. Thank you for the info.

BTW, I don't usually read trip reports, but I read your last one, and found it to be very informative. Also read your posts on Lonely Planet. Okay, I'll stop now. Starting to sound like a groupie!

I was in Chichi on a Thursday and while it was busy, there were no hoardss of tourists. It was pretty enjoyable.

Good to know! And walkabout - a transition like that from the lake to Antigua would be a good time to squeeze a quick visit in. Have a great trip, whatever you decide!
