best cancun restaurants

Going to Cancun in November, and looking for best bets on dining. NOT looking for American Chains, but maybe ethnic or unusual or just plain excellent restaurants. Price range or style not relevant, just want a few wonderful experiences. Any tips? Thanks!

Before you leave the airport you will be given several brouchures with coupon etc. for restaurants. You will also be given a booklet called Cancun Menus which lists most popular places along with their menus and prices. Take your choice. An old line place that may not be listed is Rosa's which is down town --authentic colonial. If you go to Isla Mujeres be sure to eat at Chen Huaye--Athentic Mayan Cooking. Nothing over $4 -- try the combination platters. Located just off the basketball court in the center square.

For the most part, I've had better luck in the city, not the island. I like Los Alamandras _I know I've totally butchered the spelling, but someone will correct me i'm sure _ for Yucatacen dishes. (the tamales in banana leaves are great). Also, I love the little taquerias _ just make sure it's cooked fresh for you and choose one that is busy.

if you like seafood, go to Lorenzillo's (w/i the hotel zone). they're known as the "live lobster house" . their lobsters are fresh catch, you pick it, weigh it, and tell them how you wanted it cooked. it's scrumptious. Another one is Maria Bonita (at the Hotel Camino Real). their steaks are delicious. If you're into sunday brunch, the Cilantro at Hyatt Regency is the best. $20 buffet and you get champaigne, caviar, all the filet mignon you can get.

There are some WOnderful restuarants in Cancun.

Try the exotic "Rain Forest Cafe", or "Pat O'Brian's" (I think this is a favorite of the locals and but the food may be to eclectic for american's), or the very cosmopolitan "Planet Hollywood."
