Malpais would be an excellant choice! I would recommend Tropico Latino. It is located on the beach, has a small, but elegant pool and serves delicious food- local seafood dishes are most delicious. The area offers excellant surfing- I am not a surfer, but did visit a public park just down the beach, which was populated by young surfers from around the globe- U.S. dominating. This is a laid-back area populated, it seems, by ex-patriot americans from the 70's who now seem to do odd jobs, the ones we met taught english to local school children. You can reach the area by bus from almost anywhere. We caught a bus from Monteverde to Puntaremas. There you catch a ferry. When you reach port you can board a waiting buss to Cobano???From there you can continue via buss to Malpais or take a taxi.
