Hello, My husband and I are hoping to spend a week in Costa Rica in late June. We'd like to relax at a beautiful beach and experience the Costa Rican culture too. Any suggestions for us? What is your favorite beach in Costa Rica?
Also, I've read that June is the rainy season -- would we be rained out most of the time? Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Amy:

Perhaps the most beatiful beach in Costa Rica is Playa Conchal, but the resort there is also one of the most expensive (the Paradisius Playa Conchal). However, there are many other options in the area, close to Tamarindo, that suit every budget.

Also, you might want to think about combining your stay with a couple of days at the Arenal volcano, which is a spectacle not to be missed.

As far as the weather, June is in the rainy season, although the Pacific coast (especially the North Pacific Coast) tends to be drier than other areas. You can expect to see some rain, especially in the afternoons, but by no means I think you would be "rained out" for days on end.

Feel free to send me an email if you have more questions. Regards,

Enrique

Enrique - how would you rate the following:

Cala Luna
Punta Islita
Villa Caletas

I want to do 5-7 nights at one of the above resorts together with 5-7 nights at Tabacon beforehand.

The only reason why I chose the 3 above is because we want something with a private plunge pool and/or private jacuzzi.

We don't necessarily need to be beachfront - but I hear that the resorts above are pretty far away. How much of a walk to the beach?

Thanks, Enrique!

Simone, i have stayed at Villa Caletas. It has the best view of the Pacific Coast. It sits highish on a cliff with a stunning amphitheater. The only catch is that all of these hotels are rather isolated. Personally I would stay closer to the action and go to Manuel Antonio with a variety of jungle adventure tours nearby. But if you want a private jacuzzi, check out the hot springs in that area at www.riosparaiso.com. located deep in the rainforests of Quepos/MAntonio

to AMY:
June is the beginning of the rainy season. It will rain 1-2 hours per day. Best beaches??? My favorite area and beach is Manuel Antonio. Have fun!

Enrique and Mike,
Thank you so much for your advice! I will definitely look into this further. I just saw that flights from NY to CR are under $300 round trip right now!

I recently returned from Costa Rica and stayed in Manuael Antonio. I really enjoyed the beach there. I was in Jaco a year ago and really didn't like the beaches.

I found it on Yahoo Travel (which I believe runs through Travelocity) United has roundtrip flights from NY to San Jose, Costa Rica for $296.

Where exactly is Manuel Antonio?

I keep hearing about this "area" and I don't know exactly where it is. I've been on www.centralamerica.com and the maps don't show MA that well. Is it inland? or Coastal?

Hi everybody:

Simone:
All three hotels are very good. I agree with Mike in that Villa Caletas has the best view, but it's also isolated. Of the three, I would recommend Cala Luna if you plan to spend several days there. I think you will have more options as far as other places to go and see. Cala Luna is in Tamarindo Beach, about 10 minutes from town.

Another thing I would recommend is to spend fewer days in Tabacon. I think 5 days is too many to spend there. I'd rather go to another area, like Monteverde, or split the rest of your time between Tamarindo and Manuel Antonio. That way you'll have more options.

Manuel Antonio is in the Central Pacific coast, South of Jaco, about a 4 hour drive from San Jose.

Amy, that airfare is really good!

Send me an email if you have any questions, regards,

Enrique

Manual Antonio is my favorite--the waves are really fun to play in plus there is lots of wildlife. Note that this is not really a place you would stay, rather you would go on a day trip.

SimoneSassett,
Manuel Antonio is the name of one of CR's wonderful national parks --- a lowland rainforest with a lovely beach. And yes, it's obviously by the coast. The town is Quepos. You can fly on one of CR's internal airlines from San Jose to Quepos.

I was all over Costa Rica last June and July - most rain we had was thunder storms at nite on the Pacific Coast and afternoon downpours but not everyday. I'm spoiled by Tamarindo's atmosphere, restaurants, beaches and people. We have a place next door in Playa Longosta with the most unspoiled, clean, prettiest beach across the esturary that I've seen anywhere in CR. Not allowed to build on it. It is where the turtles nest and hatch in Feb. so we watched the whole scene. Great places to eat on the beach in
tamarindo such as Nogui's for breakfast. Lazy Wave,Iguana and Las Palmas for dinner. Captain Suizo Hotel is also very good - they did a great birthday dinner for a fifth grade student of mine who came to visit. Fly into Liberia (easier) and go on up to the Arenal volcano - it's a real experience - I'm originally from Hawaii so it is not like Kilauea in Hawaii but close. You will love your trip - eat and drink everything - all good!

HI Marilynn-
What is the nicest hotel in Tamarindo? It sounds like a great place for the second half of our honeymoon!

Hi Sarah:

The best hotel in the area is the Paradisius Playa COnchal. Not really in Tamarindo, but close. It's an all-inclusive, and it's known as one of the best hotels in Costa Rica. You might want to look into it further. Another great recommendation in Tamarindo beach itself would be the Capitan Suizo.

You can't go wrong with either one.
Send me an -email if you have any question,

Enrique

To rungirl2002,
I really like Hotel Capitaz Suizo but do not know if I'd stay there for a honeymoon, only because they seem to have a lot of families stay there and kids running around is not my idea of a relaxing quiet honeymoon. If that would not bother you, yes, it's a beautiful hotel. I personally would not stay at the HUGE all inclusive either as it's not very close to town (a bit isolated) and there are so many good fun places to eat in town. That all being said, you may also want to look at Sueno Del Mar. It's a small romantic B&B that would be very nice for a honeymoon!

Hola,
I agree with Enrique that Playa Conchal is great for a honeymoon and it's golf course if you are a golfer. It is all inclusive but you will be totally isolated if you don't have a car. My fifth grader's family stayed their as Dad was a golfer so Mom and girls spent time taking taxis to our area. I think Captain Suezo and Sueno del Mar (B&B)have honeymoon suites. We used to walk up the beach to Sueno Del Mar for a great breakfast as it is near our place. I'm sure the food is very plentiful and good at Playa Conchal. We will be there the end of June so give me a buzz for more ideas on where to go (653-0746 in Tamarindo) or email me at [email protected]nn
