Bariloche, where to stay?

Hi folks,
I'm living in Brazil and we're (me, my wife and our three children) going to San Carlos de Bariloche, next july for vacations. Do you think it's a good idea to stay at a good hotel (please, tell us which one)in the town itself, or it's worth staying at Llao Llao Hotel, a little far from the town?. We'd appreciate your coments. Thanks!

Llao llao is wonderful and a beautiful spot but also there are many cabins and self contained accommodation just out of town along the road to Llao Llao and right on the lake's edge as well which would suit a family. Don't worry about transport because taxis are very cheap or even cheaper are the buses which go regularly and pick up at suitable intervals along the road. Google accommodation and check on the map.

I loved the Aldebaran. Much cheaper than Llao Llao. I wrote a review under the title My Argentine Adventure.

I think that cmcfong is totally right. The wellknown Llao Llao, is the old dame of Bariloche, located in a superb spot but there are many new options all along the road from Bariloche to the Llao Llao. If I am correct the road is called Bustillo and the distance between downtown Bariloche to LLao Llao is aproximately 23-25 kms.
The Llao Llao is beatifully placed on top of an elevation and surrounded by lakes + its own golf course, and offers fantastic views. But many other new places are much cheaper and also some have fantastic views. They are great buys in comparison and should be seriously considered before spending a lot and maybe not getting such a good room after all.
A must should be to have lunch one day at the Llao Llao. A delicious lunch is served wih a lovely view.

Happy new year, Graziella. Definitely take her advice and have a long leisurely lunch at Llao Llao. Their en casa ice cream is fabulous! Also the on site shops were the nicest I visited in the Patagonia region. Have a great trip.

Just got back from Christmas vacation and spent 5 days at the Llao Llao. It was the highlight of our 16 day stay in Argentina. I don't agree with one of the responders that taxis are cheap. The taxi into Bariloche from the Llao Llao is approximately $15 american dollars. So you have to add appoximately $30 to your dinner cost if you go into Bariloche. However, there are some great restaurants near the LLao LLao. Cesare which is the restaurant in the hotel is overrated. Very small portions for a high price. However, the food at the pool is very good. Since you will be there in July, you may want to stay closer to town. However, if you plan to be there Dec, Jan or Feb, I highly recommend the Llao LLao, because the view from the pool is breathtaking and the service impeccable.

$15 dollars for a taxi to do 23-25 kms is not expensive, but the point is the Llao Llao is in a wonderful location but a little off town. It usually happens with resort hotels in most of the world life tends to happen inside the resort. I personally do not like that .Usually a deterent to go out for dinner is that transportantion is expensive.
As we stated before there are now lovely places to stay closer to town.

It takes about 1/2 hour to drive from Llao Llao to Bariloche and $15 for a taxi is not expensive in my books seeing that the same distance in Boston cost me $80US.
About the 8klm marker on Bustillo
Rd ( I think that is the name of the road) on the lake side is a beautiful apartment hotel but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of it. There are lots of restaurants around there, the cost of a bus is about 20 cents into town or a Taxi is about $4, you are close to the ski resort as well. If I can find this hotel I will post it on here as this is the one I was going to use when next I went to Bariloche.

We stayed at LL a few years ago and the rooms were tiny. Any other comments on the rooms?
