ATM in Airport

It was suggested on this digest that I get colones at the airport. Where in the airport is the place to exchange currency? (Terminal, Baggage claim?)

Is it an ATM Machine? Is there a place in the airport to exhange dollars that I bring with me for colones?

It was also suggested that I get some small denominations of colon currency? If the monetary exchange is by an ATM machine, how do I get coins and small denominations of colones?

There is a Money exchange window on your way out of the airport. I don't know the hours of operation. I did not see any ATM's. You can probably change some American dollars for Colones at your Hotel. I think 100 dollars was as high as they went. As for coins, buy something with Colones and get change back. Have some American dollars when you land to give tips for taxi or Hotel shuttle. Get ready for an awkward experience when you leave the last door of the airport. There will be several people there all wanting to help you. Keep your bags near you at all times. I thought there was a "Celebrity" out front because of all the commotion. It turns out that "you" are the Celebrity. But it is safe. The Hotel shuttle drivers hold up signs. It was simple but can be confusing.

There is an ATM at the airport. You'll see the sign for it right by the exchange window. It's around the corner from the exchange window.

I am happy to hear it is over. My deepest sympathies to the victims of this tragic and despicable act.

Oops, I posted the above message in the wrong discussion. I meant that as a response to the robbery and deaths in Monteverde.

Hello, when you change cash at the airport, you have a bad exchange rate. Its better to use ATM. Exchange rates, other ATM in Costa Rica, actual arrivel and departure times you will find on www.costaricaweb.de in the airport section.

This is new information. I should not exchange money at the airport? I recall someone saying the rate at the airport was good. My first day I will be in Arenal. Should I exchange money there? How much money should I get in colones?

Use the ATM in the airport to get colones.
Many places actually take US$. I was in a hurry leaving the airport so didn't stop by the ATM. I actually never had to change money. Everywhere I went quoted prices in both US$ and colones. When I gave US$, I usually got colones in return. I aslo used CC everywhere I could.
Bring lots of $1 and $5 for tips.
