Anyone know of a cell phone company that can serve Tulum?

We're in Tulum for 12 days and we must have a gsm or sattelite phone during our stay. I've checked with Sprint and can't use them. I called an international phone company and regular cell service is not in Tulum -- not enough towers nearby.

Before I spend $$$$$ on a new phone and $9/min -- PLEASE share any info that can help us. We depart on the 21st May.

Thanks!!

I don't know if this will help any, but my husband was toying with the idea of taking a satellite phone with us on our last trip (our previous excursion prior was in Mexico City, so we used cell phones that time). Anyway, I had the international option put on my phone here, and had calls placed from home to our hotel. I don't know if you'll be needing service for business, kiddos, or whatever else...so I don't know if that would help you...

Thanks for the responses. Pepper -- thank you! Locogrino helped a lot. I am calling Cingular to see what they can do for me.

The thought of taking a phone with us just goes against our grain but it could be the only thing that saves our trip. Otherwise, we would have to cancel.

Keep any other ideas/experience coming. I'll report back on what I found.

Hi: We stay in Puerto Aventuras, just north of Akumal. For business reasons, my husband had to get a quad band cellphone in order to communicate with his office. We got this from Cingular because they serve that area. The calls from here, NC, were $.79 per minute in either direction. The reception was perfect.
